Environment maps?

Post by contegufo » Mon Aug 31, 2015 5:01 am

Hi

I downloaded some maps from the site http://www.viz-people.com/portfolio/free-hdri-maps/.
They have the black bottom what is the reason?
Excuse my ignorance!

Probably because it's mainly for lighting. You're encouraged to either model the ground, or use a backplate. :)

Dosch's HDRI's aren't (from my experience) as well captured, and thus have smaller dynamic range and thus give weaker shadows and highlights.

You have to build something below the horizon.

That looks crap. :) Are you sure that's a HDRI? Not a jpg preview?

It was originally 20.000x10.000, was reduced to 1000 × 500 pixels to make a test.

yes it is a jpg.

That is not meant to use for lighting. You don't get any decent shadows, you need an image with .hdr or .exr format.

Those look a bit odd. Basically the perhaps most used are then ones from Viz-people, and Peter Guthrie:
