Nope, still only bevels the whole thing.

I couldn't help myself, but think that this could be achieved quite easily with the BlenderMechanicalGears scripts.

See attached Zip, contains .blend and .mpg animation.

Not saying this is better in any way, just only that I managed this in about 35 minutes, only to satisfy my own curiosity.

(odd that the gear ratios are 37:19:13:11:7 and yet it still works!)

Thanks for figuring out the animation, I'll definitely study the .blend.

Another update. Model THAT with polies...

You're selecting the "circle" curves that I assume you extruded into the gear.

Try deleting them first :D

That was it, thanks! :) Last modeling update on the gear part. All that's left to model is a surface to set it in.

just a small observation - the hex bolt looks a bit clunky and out of scale. Perhaps modelling a nice roundhead or countersunk screw would look more attractive ?

Well, in my mind I imagine the whole thing being about 15'' (.4 m) wide, so the bolt isn't really out of scale and screws would be too big.

Hmm... Most of the gears seem to animate ok, but meshing with the crown gear is borken. :(

[Edit] Nevermind, PEBKAC error. I had set the crown gear to have 38 instead of 37 teeth.

Hum, I'm sorry to squat this wip but I want to say thank you ppl to make me have a second look on MoI, I missed it's technical purpose. Attached a mechanical stuff I did, MoI made that easy !

And I found that in most case it's better to export ngons and triangulate in your usual 3d app, I had undesired results with MoI's own tesselation on concave shapes (triangles covering openings).

Nice job! :)

Fixed the animation for the most part, there's still some minor penetration issues between the crown gear and the large 3 spoked one. I'm hoping they're not too noticeable in solid view, as I have no idea how to correct them.

Here's a quick half-hour render to test out my bump map for brushed metal. How does it look? I want the material to be stainless steel, but I used Al.nk for the mat. Would Cr.nk look closer?

That looks so damn cool.

And feel free to share the secret of a steel material with the rest of us; I just end up using al.nk (just like you did) for anything metal that isn't gold, in my renders. Haha!

It's promising but the bump map value is too high IMHO.

Also try to do some circular Scratches around the screws.
