I couldn't help myself, but think that this could be achieved quite easily with the BlenderMechanicalGears scripts.
See attached Zip, contains .blend and .mpg animation.
Not saying this is better in any way, just only that I managed this in about 35 minutes, only to satisfy my own curiosity.
(odd that the gear ratios are 37:19:13:11:7 and yet it still works!)

Hmm... Most of the gears seem to animate ok, but meshing with the crown gear is borken.

[Edit] Nevermind, PEBKAC error. I had set the crown gear to have 38 instead of 37 teeth.

Hum, I'm sorry to squat this wip but I want to say thank you ppl to make me have a second look on MoI, I missed it's technical purpose. Attached a mechanical stuff I did, MoI made that easy !
And I found that in most case it's better to export ngons and triangulate in your usual 3d app, I had undesired results with MoI's own tesselation on concave shapes (triangles covering openings).

Nice job!
Fixed the animation for the most part, there's still some minor penetration issues between the crown gear and the large 3 spoked one. I'm hoping they're not too noticeable in solid view, as I have no idea how to correct them.
