that's why I didn't suggest gold and silver :P

You could try a dark or bright copper :D (Void or Pt blended with it)

I also tried 50:50% gold and silver - looks good ;)

Animation size render done to 100 spp, took 35 minutes.

Do you think I should add an exponent map to the large gear to make the spokes have blurry reflections? BTW, the large gear is steel, the small gear is aluminum with exponent 1000, and the cross-bar gear is copper.

I think you should put at least a subtle bump on all the gears.

As in a slightly brushed look?

looks great :D

a scratch map ;)

btw, your brush map - is it JUST bump or also Exponent? I suggest you, trying, to make it both :) (as well as the scratches on the grears. if you make them)

Right now it's just bump, I'll try adding some exponent. What would you think of a mahogany mounting base instead of brushed metal?

Mahogany test. The grain is a bit out of scale and there's no bump yet. I like it so far, though.

looks good, indeed :)
Is this already a combined exponent + bump map?

You need the same map, for both, for brushed material, maybe a little darkened, if you have pure white in the map. ;) for scratches, it can stay similar :)

Here it is with the bump map applied as exponent as well, but I don't see a difference at first glance.

hum, yeah, true...

neither better not worse... also the cleanness isn't affected...

What does the samplerate vs time say? are they similar or is there an obvious difference?

I guess, that effect might get stronger, when you use it with heavier noise... so, it doesn't matter, with that, then... hum...

Not really an update, but here is a full size still render of what I have so far. Me thinks the wood grain needs to be a bit smaller and some bump...

Looking pretty sweet,
still hanging out for some scratches on internal gears; and wood texture is too low res :)
