there is a need:
It's easier to place the cam that way.

If you have the cam slightly above the water, it will reflect too stron, due to the flat angle.
If you have it slightly in the water, the same thing will happen, but you will see the ground instead.

If you add a glass plane, there is no need, to place the cam correctly....

If you place the cam INFRONT of the water, it looks strange...


Ok, maybe, I'm wrong, but anyway: why should he NOT place a plane?

Actually, suvakas discovered that the front part of the water that is closest to the camera has to be completely 100% flat and and then the pane isn't needed.

However, my water was a little wonky from the displacement and smoothing so I was getting crap reflections like the Krammeister mentioned but the pane seemed to fix it.

and fear not ctzn, I have put more duckeh's on the water :D
