I think that it is a magnifier effect, where light focused within the body is hitting the other side. If that is true that tells us a few things maybe:
- - there is no opaque sub-body (there should be one, because the sss zone is very thin in real life)
- the scattering coefficient is not strong enough (focusing should not happen this clearly)
- absorbtion is too weak
- if not uniform, the phase function is too directional
Maybe all these points are not true, but that may give you a few directions for research.
