Hmm, what's the electric/ conditioning/ spaceleasing tab on that setup? It's not just a bank of desktops, right?
For professionals this would be a very good service, but for fun, way too expensive.
 Perhaps a separate Professional/Commercial Use and Hobbyist/fun rate?
0.75 vs 0.10?

No because my wife wouldn't understand if I had to spend 40$ for a selfmade picture (which, according to my skills, wouldn't even be a nice picture).

Yeah, if it were free that would be great. :D

Would still like to know what the ratio of operating cost to utilization fee would be. What would be the minimum you could charge and break even?

Because essentially(if it is a farm of desktops) you are spending the same operating cost (not including peripherals) at home, only at 1/25th the speed(assuming your setup is equal to one of the nodes, and you are using 100% of the farms capacity) so it's harder to notice.

(Home operating cost/h)*((desired resolution*desired spp)/Home machine spph)=the cost of rendering at home
+ you (or your wife) can't use your computer for much else while you are using it to render.
+ you have to wait 4evr

there *is* a free renderfarm... the problem: It only allows open sourced stuff, which isn't the case with Indigo :?

First, I have to correct myself: it's not a renderfarm but a supercomputer with 256 cores :)

Then, I have to correct myself again: It should be available for Indigo, too

Next, I again have to correct myself again: It's not "free" but you can use it 3h without cost, more or less :)

Such a service would be sweet, I'd guess even at a slightly higher price point, if:

- the compute power is available when requested and
- a secure data transfer can be guaranteed, though how to meet strict req. is unclear.

For someone working with an engineering company, sending confidential information will be an issue...

It would be great, Ono.
I've also contacted powa about their renderfarm service.

Hello Daniel,

Unfortunately at the moment we are not providing Indigo as an available
renderer, because of its license which forbids commercial use. We are
working to add new items to our list of supported renderers, and will
surely keep in consideration your request.

I would like to invite you to try Powua anyway by creating your
personal account on the website and providing the free Powua Code I am
sending in a separate mail.

Feel free to contact us again for any suggestion of if you encounter
any problem while using Powua.

With kind regards,

I don't know how many people is using indigo for commercial purposes. I think it's a great realistic renderer - the only issue is that most animations nowadays are compositions - they're not entirely made in 3D.

A producer friend of mine uses 3D artists to build party/show/event scenes to show to his clients. These scenes are usually built in a day or two and render time is really an issue. The price for all (4-6) stills varies from US$750,00 - US$1.500,00 (everything -> scene creation, modeling rendering, etc) and it's done in 3DMAX. Maybe they could start using indigo - and if they could get it done in a few hours and not days...
