By pointless, I mean,
Why not just do some test renders to get the light contributions correct in the first place, or use real-world light luminous fluxes to compute the correct result?

It's kind of nice to be able to derive many different images/moods from the same render (night, sun, HDR... mixture of those). You could render these separately but, well, you know. Impatience...

The other thing is, no matter how "scientific" or "accurate" you try and make your renderer (and no doubt it's very good in these respects) it's always going to be possible to set up scenes which are basically unrealistic, or lean more towards "artistic" than "scientifically measurably accurate".
Features like light blending etc are great if you intend to use the renderer artistically, and I don't see anything wrong with that, although I agree it might not be 100% accurate from a scientific point of view.

I agree with BbB and dougal2! It's about having the option to change the
light/mood later without the need to rerender the darn image over the
same f*cking long time! :P :P :D  ;)

No offense but some people need to be forced to see the advantage!
Is it so hard to understand? I can't believe that!

actually multilight is something nice to have, but I think thats it...

I don't think multilight would speed up my workflow in finding the perfect light situation for a Scene...
Its a Sexy feature to present your Work, like often seen from Maxwell users... ok... fine...

I'm more interested in a boring "speed up feature" than in this!

The top feature I would like to see, is simply that Ono again starts to comment his thoughts
about what he is thinking about Indigo development, about his tests and plans etc.
=> OnoSendai's Blog.

Haven some insight into development this way, makes people calm and they don't start
to request Features over and over again... like in this thread.

First Request Feb 2007
Second Request Sep 2007

Please use SEARCH before starting over and over again the same discussion....
this is soooo boring!

@ZomB

I do understand that you're interested in a "boring" speed up feature.
But what, if this is not possible to code with what Nik wants Indigo to
be - unbiased, but instead you've to buy a faster computer?!

note: Ask yourself why feversofts marketing advertises fry
with "physically-based render engine" ...

And I also agree I would love to have more informations on Nik's
thoughts over his blog, but it seems he's "distracted" by other
things. That's also the point why we do not have an actual 64bit
and linux release. Nik said compiling would take about 2 minutes,
but he has other things to do ... *meeeh*

And yes, some requests are repeated. This has to do with Nik
not talking to much about some requests and some people
not using the search function ... and the MOD's that don't
take care of this. Sounds blunt, but it's the truth. I was a long
time mod/smod/admin to know what I'm talking about.

Anyway, Layer blending would be a speed up for a lot of people,
but I think those who have no use for it will never understand
this and don't even want to, because it doesn't mean anything
to them ... "over and out!" ;)

disclamer: It's not my intention to say that fryrender
is biased nor that feversoft hides facts.

*activating bug-block-shield against psor's tries of bugging me*

I kinda agree with both sides:
I think, multi light is a great feature, but I myself would rarely use it...

Compiling does only need 2 mins, maybe... but then, you need to test, if there where any problems (besides those, the debugger found during compiling)...
Ono also said, the next Linux build will be a lot better. Much code is fixed... I guess, that wouldn't be possible without a longer pause, looking through the whole thing and searching for ways to improve it....

ok, we're talking about multilight, here!
If you take photos with a real camera (in archviz or still-life) you must take different shots with different exposures, to be sure that the color saturation matches your idea of the final result.
I am the first who makes tests and tries different solutions for the lighting, but i am really convinced that for an interior render the maxwell-multilight-system is the best side-feature that a rendering engine can have! if you try once to make a render with multilight enabled, you understand that it speeds up things a lot!

I wish that Ono could find soon an IPS (Indigo-Polylight-System)

Cheers!

++1

And I wish for a good GUI that makes it easy to deal with it! 8)

Hi all!

It was absolutely out of my intentions to create such a angry debate (because, guys, it's getting angry) over the usefulness or not of a multilight system. The forum topic says "bugs and requests", so i decided to post here an idea. But IT'S ONLY AN IDEA.
Yes, for someone it could be useful, for someone it couldn't; someone likes the idea, someone else doesn't think it would help so much..

Ok! That's all right! :D

I didn't mean that it should be developed in 2 days either: i really don't care too much if it would take 2 years: indigo is already so great for me that this side-feature can wait!! :D

Last but not least, i'm really sorry if this topic had been already treated in another thread
I beg mod's pardon

I only think this is a big feature, that's all..

Like displacement.

I'm sorry. I did it again...

But, see: i go around and around the net all the day long for my job, and i often see CG images, read other forums, discover new tricks in the rendering world.. I know it's not an ordained method, but if i see something interesting i say to myself "i have to speak about that to indigo creek"; i've a sort of feeling that you all out there can resolve any request; i'm really not concerned about developing times.

..if the change is worth the work, obviously
Cheers to everyone!

:?:

If you have a room you can turn more lights, put more powerful lights, wait for the day go dimmer, there's no expense on being "scientifically measurably accurate', it's just a matter of doing what is already done on violet regarding exposition...

Since I'm doing major surgery on the Indigo core already, I'll have a look at doing light layer blending soon.
