MoI test

Post by BbB » Thu Aug 02, 2007 8:12 pm

Hi there, haven't been here for a while so I thought I'd post this little something here. It's a modelling test done using Moment of Inspiration, a wonderfully intuitive NURBS modelling software that, for now, is free (http://www.moi3d.com/). I know many of you would have heard about it, but since we don't seem to have many MoI models in the gallery, I thought I'd drop this here. To me, this is a perfect complement to Blender, as it allows manipulations that would be nearly impossible to achieve in a poly modeller, and it delivers amazingly clean .obj meshes when using a reasonably high poly count. The models were imported in Blender and rendered with Indigo 08.

The more I use MoI, the more I like it. My only gripe is the high poly count you need to make NURBS objects work plausibly as poly meshes, which does slow down Blender quite a bit. I obviously need to keep experimenting a bit more to get a better compromise between realism and speed.
(also, if anyone's interested, you're well advised to split all edges in Blender after importing .obj models from MoI to avoid bizarre normals behaviour - you can still see some slight errors along the rim of the outer sphere on the second, slightly blurry, model at the back.)

I've been fumbling in the dark myself, but I can work on a little explanation about how I imported these in Blender for rendering. Bear with me for a few days.

Yes, I think so too. Much easier to approach than Rhino (though the author also developed Rhino, as far as I understand). And what a relief to have Boolean operators that actually work!!!

I love MoI , it's similiar to Rhino (developper was a Rhino coder), the only problem is that im totally SICK of this free software that when in final it will cost a lot of money...
Gibson said that it will cost 200$ when in final

I don't know. 200 bucks may seem high (unless your currency is the euro :D ) but it's still much lower than most of the comparable stuff out there...

Did you use the N-gons export? I ask as I know Blender doesn't have true support for that, and your mesh looks nice & clean.

MoI is great to work with, hardly need a keyboard. :)

Yes, that's what I used. I find Blender messes up with tris. Then again, you really need to split all edges in order to get the mesh clean when smoothed.

Ahhh, yes... EdgeSplit? That cures a lot of woes.
