Ok so here's my current render (at 30% res) at ~5,867spp (~237 hours). I will upload the finished render to the Finished Work forum once it's around the 10,000spp mark. Right now the nitrile sss is just starting to form and so are the fine extrusion lines in the mid sections (not that you can see them at this res). By 10,000spp they both should be well developed.
This is the last render I will be doing of these babies in "mint" condition. Now that the models are complete my next task is to dirty them up a bit texture-wise and start putting these cylinders into a real working robot model...I did say this was a long term project right?
The insane render time is not helped by the fact that it was started with 1.1.15 and due to the kd-tree bug I had to run at less than half potential speed for the first 120 hours. right now it's averaging about 1000spp per day under 1.1.16 in contrast to the ~400spp per day I was getting before.

Weee, worth showing WytRaven !
So all can see that, as you recommended earlier, you are applying your rules on how to obtain good looking renders. Good looking is an euphemism here

OMG

The best long term project, Indigo had so far... (Is there actually any other one?)
I love those mats and can't wait to see the robot
so, you've a ~250% performance boost? that's very good

I may not have parents to worry about these days...but I do have a wife
...Yeah not good on the old energy consumption that's for sure. I think the final robot will need to be Ranched...
I am aware that there are some inefficiencies in this model at the moment from a rendering perspective and one of the first things I'm going to try is pulling off nitrile without using SSS. I'm not sure what's changed in Indigo since I last rendered this mat but it is coming out a lot darker than it used to...so it needs some attention anyway.

Yeah about that...bear in mind this is being rendered on a now quite lowly dual core Athlon FX62 system. Probably considered bottom end machine these days. It has served me well for quite some years now but is definately due for replacement. Bring on the Nehalem based Mac Pro

Well I'm disappointed

After 367h 40m of rendering equating to just over 10000spp the nitrile material is still dark blue and has barely started to show signs of convergence. I let it go as I remember that last time the nitrile started dark... Well it hasn't changed at all this time round it's been that dark colour from the start. So either the exporter has screwed with the interpretation of the material or indigo has changed internally with regard to calculating SSS. Or maybe I'm just looking for something to blame to make me feel better
I'm going to have to pull the plug as this is just going nowhere. I will still post as a finished work but am sorely disappointed with the end result.
No more SSS for me I am going to have to find a way of approximating the same effect using normal materials....yay, here goes another 9 million test renders

looks good so far although I agree the nitrile needs a little more refinement
to me the socket screws look just a little thin walled in the hex part too but its coming along

I'm seriously starting to wonder if Blendigo has a scene scale bug or something as I can think of no reason why an unchanged material would render so differently a couple of indigo/blendigo versions apart.
Anyway I have decided not to upload as a finished work because it simply isn't in this state. It's just wrong.
As for hex nut comment: That wall is defined by the technical drawing it was taken from. I'm not going to argue with the designer of the real product

Hi Wyt, I've been messing with the SSS code recently, so that might be the problem

Ono: Ok thx for the heads up.
BigFan: I see what you are saying but bear in mind these cylinders are only about 30cm long and the hex screws are stainless steel...

Hi wyt!
...not so expert about nitrile, but i'd say it's all right: a little selective color in PS will easily fix the color issue! Now that you know the "bug" next time you'll set a lighter colour, and that's all!
My 2 cents about SSS: you can try faking them blending a diffuse (or a diffuse transmitter) and a phong. It works fine and it's easier to calculate..
