My First "Proper" Render

Hey everyone...
This is my first "proper" render using Indigo... Any suggestions??
I'm a noob and I need to improve my modeling skills for Sketchup... Any ideas on where I can find good tutorials. I'm fine with using the 3d warehouse but the triangle count gets too high and I get the memory allocation error...
Is there another 3d software I should use. I don't get much time to model because I'm only 14 and have tons of schoolwork :( Also I'm getting the weird beige colour on both the Barcelona chairs... No idea why..

I like them both. perhaps the reflection on the bed's sideboard is too high. you could try out a very subtle specular map or blend to get a more tainted wood feel on the reflections. they also need a little beveling. btw. the bedsheet stinks. is that a mistake?

The most issues about your scene should be seen actually by yourself ;)
Simply stuff that isn't this way in RL... and thats something you aim for, right?!

- How about some windows, with (sun) Light from outside... that would really enhance the whole atmosphere.
- The carpet has a way to high displacement value, also displacement map isn't maybe optimal.
- The planks of the floor texture are way to big

The Barcelona Chair maybe has problems with normals,. check that they all face outside.


In your case as a 3D beginner I would highly recommend you to start rebuilding existing images!
Try to recreate some nice images and train by this your lightning, texturing and modeling skills and your eye for architectural finesse!

Also give it a try to model some object by yourself and not only to take stuff from the Internet to gain some sills in this area and get a better feeling for the objects.

Regarding your age I would recommend to switch to the more complex 3D app Blender, its maybe more complicated, but you end up mastering a tool that is very versatile. Learning such Applications with 30 is much harder, trust me ;)

I would recommend to switch to the more complex 3D app Blender
I've already tried 3ds Max but making the models takes too long. I don't know if it's just me or if everyone feels this way. I suppose I'll just have to try to be more patient.

No it isn't. It's just a terrible model from the 3d Warehouse. I've downloaded a better one and will post an updated render after sometime...

I just realised :oops: Thanks for pointing it out, it's an obvious mistake.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will the scene a bit to improve it while working on improving my patience (and by 3ds Max skills)!

Here they are two updated pictures.
I've added a few details and changed a few things. I don't wnat to spend more time on this because I've decided to focus on Max :) Also the HDR doesn't exactly 'apply' to the image.A cityscape would be better.

Windows do exist... You just can't see then very well. Renders with HDRs take a lot longer to 'cook'. This one took about 9 hours.

For sure patience is important for modeling, but you become faster the more you model. It is well invested time, for most projects you can't simply take stuff from the web, the quality isn't always convincing, and buying high quality models isn't a option for hobbyists.

regarding your question: I work with Cinema 4D, since it is the 3D app I learned to work with during study... so I stay with it.

3D Max is maybe a little expensive regarding you being a hobbyist and your age, so I recommended Blender as a free and legal way to work with ;)

Well the cost isn't a problem because my mum is an architect and already owns it :mrgreen:

For someone who is beginning with 3D I would not dismiss Sketchup. Agreed, Blender allows you to do more complex models and Blenders UV mapping is very good, however Blender is also in a transitional phase right now.

For a new user it may make most sense to start with Blender 2.5, however, there is no stable Indigo exporter available for Blender 2.5. If you start learning right now with 2.4, there is some stuff to relearn with 2.5 and some tools you may get attached to in 2.4 simply don't (yet) have an equivalent in Blender 2.5.

There is also a multitude of Sketchup plugins that allow you to make more complex models.

If you're interested in finding out what can be done with these two applications look for posts from these two users (amongst others):
