Indigo rendering backwards?

Post by crc » Fri Oct 12, 2007 8:58 am

So I have a scene set up that i have rendered a few times with no problems other than my inexperience with materials.

I changed the glass atrium area from the Thin Glass preset to Glass and gave it a thickness.

Than when I render it, the render goes from somewhat dark to totally dark.

What gives? I changed the material back to the Thin Glass preset from Glass and it is rendering fine again.

check the orientation of all glass faces. They should all be pointing out. Make sure ALL of your glass windows have thickness. And set the opacity (absorption) of the window material to zero.

I am guessing that for some reason (probably reversed faces), Indigo thinks that the camera is inside a glass medium and that medium is absorbing all of the light rays which would result in the black render.

I did check all the faces, in fact if they aren't correct than they render opaque. (already made that mistake once  )

but, the glass material of the atrium is a different material than the windows.

I gave it a thickness, got the normals correct, than in the Edit Material dialog box, I choose "Assign material preset", than chose "Glass".

I am using an exr map, not sure if that matters. but as soon as I changed the material back to Thin Glass, it renders fine.

same scene, same settings, same everything except for the material change.

yeah there are tone mapping and issues with phong causing the rendering to go black in test 8 if you have specular material together with phong

change all phong to diffuse and it should be ok

or don't let Phong touch/intersect specular

thanks Kram,

it actually looks better there I think, when I let it render till it is much clearer, it starts to look like a model instead of a building, kind of plastic-e. I think it's a matter of getting better materials though. and subtly using slight bump maps. when i get one I like I'll post it up though, and hopefully get some pointers to make it better.
