Photo match textures not rendering/rendering skew

Post by dewey » Tue Nov 25, 2008 5:56 am

Can someone tell me how to get Indigo to render textures when they are applied to surfaces from photo matching? I used 'Project textures from photo' to get the textures onto the model but they aren't being rendered (no textures on render at all).

I read that it is a problem with the back of the faces? So must I select each individual face and 'reverse' it? Because when I do this, some textures go skewed in sketchup then none of them come out right in the render.

Does 'explode distorted texture' have something to do with this also?

Thanks

edit: Indigo 1.1.14 and SkIndigo 1.1.12

Yes, you have to use this feature in order to get photomatched textures to render properly.

So I have to apply photo-matching textures, reverse faces, apply photo matching texture again then explode distorted texture on faces, one-by one?

Also, how do I remove the exploded texture association?

well. you could make sure all your faces are pointing the right way first.

How do I know which way a face is facing?

Thanks

learn sketchup
it's a pretty basic aspect of using sketchup, whether you use a rendering program or not.

By the way, and this could be extremely noobish of me, but does a photo matched image have to be applied to a face to render?

Now why would you do that? This problem is rooted in the fact that SketchUp does not provide correct UV coordinates for distorted textures. Try rendering that scene in Podium (or another rendering engine) and you will see the same problem. AFAIK, the only renderer that supports rendering of distorted textures is Kerkythea.

The problem has nothing to do with projected textures. It has to do with 'distorted' textures. Distorted textures have been skewed by either being projected from a photomatch or by using the texture positioning tools (pushpins)

However, you are in luck because SkIndigo has had a workaround for this problem for a long time. All you do is right-click and select 'Explode Distorted Texture' from the SkIndigo UV menu. This will create a new material with an un-distorted version of the texture that will render properly.

I created this feature before the release of SU7. There is a native operation in SU7 called 'make unique texture' that does exactly the same thing. (I guess they liked my idea...)

One more thing:
When I tested your scene and I used the 'workaround' I mentioned, I may have found a new bug. So, even when you use the workaround, you might get an error message from Indigo. It is related to the material name. Before rendering, you might have to change the material names so that it includes only alpha-numeric characters. It's hard to explain why. I need to do some more testing.
