Grass Tutorial Anyone?

Post by winnabago111 » Tue May 12, 2009 10:30 am

I want to put grass in my scene and but render it in indigo so particles are out of the question.

I've only found one tutorial and it is out of date. Does anyone have another tutorial or a good way of doing it. Thanks.

Oh ok, I didn't see there was a sixth page.

And I watched it, but would I'm looking to create a field of grass like the one in the outdated tutorial. Do you think it would work.

You can make it with a patch of grass and then use the instancing technique, I saw a post with a patch somewhere in the forum, or you can make it with 3dsMax hair or Cinema Hair and convert the hair to polygons, if I find some free time I could make a patch or even a blender scene with it.

I only use blender because I don't have anything else. When you say instanced do you mean to duplicate with ctrl-d.

He does exactly that if you watch the entire thing...All you'd have to do is scale the plane (top one in video) and increase it's grasse density then apply it onto your terrain and voila, it should be it.

Here you have a zip with the blender scene and you have to replicate the patch with alt-D this way Indigo takes it as instance

Thanks for the file, and is there any way to lower the density so that my computer doesn't run super slow.

Hi, if you download the file again you will find a new scene with lower density of grass

I want the same density but that much slows down my computer. Is there a way to hide some of the grass or speed it up, but while still being able to see where its located.

If you yalk about the patch scenes I made the first one has 15000 "hairs" and a subdivision of 6, the second has 3500 "hairs" with 4 subdivisions, will it be fine 7500 hairs with 4 subdivisions? or you tell me and I can make the patch.

I started a wiki page at..

http://www.indigorenderer.com/wiki/grass_tutorial

If anyone wants to paste in some images and a lump of text I'll reformat it later on..
