Blender Noob Questions

hi guys

how do i see how tall my object is?
For now i don't know if it's 1cm or 1km big

(need that for playing with sss)

Press 'N' when you select the object (RMB).

and in Edit Mode, F9 (Editing)>Mesh Tools 1> Edge Length

Also, to use as reference; when you add a plane it's 2x2 meters. This gives you a good scale and proportion idea once you insert other models or create your geometry.
If you then select the plane and hit "N" to open the "Transform Properties" window, like Jurasek said, you'll see its dimension in X and Y but zero in its value for Z; if you then enter edit mode (hit TAB) select all vertices (A), hit "E" to extrude and while dragging your mouse you hit "CTRL" you'll get snapped increments for the extrusion. When you exit Edit mode (hit TAB again) you'll now see in your transform properties window (N) that now you also got a value in Z

It appears that learning blender isn't as difficult as other 3D-App. Users claim everytime ^^

of course i'm no blender-pro now but it's true this thread helped me
alot in understanding blender! again thank you guys!
With the help of this thread and alot of testing and reading i'm able to
work with blender (which wasn't the case before).
i surely would have further questions if i worked with blender allday long.
but on one hand i don't have the time atm to play too often with it and
on the other hand blender is unfortunatly still a bit weird to use for me

blender is getting better and better and if they decide to change the gui
and workflow for a new version you could count me as a new blenderfan.

There is a plan changing the gui, but not the work flow, which most Blender users really like.
It will be changed @ lender 2.5
also the website gets redesigned soon:

on the other hand blender is unfortunatly still a bit weird to use for me

Keep asking and you'll be a pro quite soon.
I think, there is not even ONE person out there, who is able to use blender 100% Some, very very few, may use 90%, which is quite high, but no one has discovered all the features, 'cause there are so much and 'cause they increase in variety extremely fast.

Download this video to watch a true blender master (Andy Goralczyk aka "@ndy") model an awesome alien head at the siggraph conference. The more you use blender, the more the interface makes sense. Give it some more time and maybe you can model as organically as Andy.

3rd: "It's good" (You either are between 2-3 or already at 3)
4th: "I like it"
5th: "It's great"
6th: "I love it."
