Tom's GH House Competition Entry

Post by StompinTom » Mon Mar 01, 2010 1:49 pm

Hey hey,

Just if anyone is interested in taking a look or giving any comments or critiques, I finally got around to starting my GH House entry. Could really use that GPU acceleration or at least a better computer :D Lot's of fog and murky water that could benefit.

Thanks for watching!

Nice progress so far, as I've said. :)

I don't think a GPU renderer could handle the required resolutions for the final entries because of VRAM limitations..

Am I allowed to post outside of the GH House forum? If not, I'll take this off immediately...

Rough rough progress rendering. Still tweaking much and deciding things.

I think you're allowed to post your progress here as long as you update your thread on the blog as well..

That little test render looks amazing, would love to see more of this project. The volumetric lighting and fog together with the trees set it off, highly original compared to most archiviz stuff. I would love to know how you achieved that lighting.

Test rendering of the interior. Not much time at all now. Rendering itself will probably take all the time from now until the deadline so I gotta finish this QUICK...

seanser: Thanks, man! I do arch. viz on a daily basis so I wanted to do something a bit more personal for this since it's a free competition. Tired of the sleek and shiny look! The lighting in that exterior scene is just Sun and Sky, but I'll give a bit more of an explanation when I have more time. It's a bit more complicated than that, and a part of is definitely luck, but once things calm down a bit I can show you what I did if you're interested.

CTZn: Thank you, sir!

Godzilla: Phew!

Soup: Thanks!

Haha StompinTom is in a very very dark place now...

I thought the competition was a good chance to do something personal for once, even if it's not a winning entry. It was a great way to push my skills a bit and try some different themes! I think arch. viz can be a wide and varied term, not necessarily just the squeaky clean marketing tool that it is often used for.

Here are the final entries. Didn't finish, a lot should be changed and improved.

Interior: 30 hours, (forget) samples/pixel, 3600x2700
Exterior: 64 hours, 554 samples/pixel, 3600x2700

Still grainy as shit, but it's all I got! Render times could definitely use some improvement... Thanks for the comments!

Ono, for scenes like this, can you suggest any way of making it go faster? Would I be better off considering a faster processor (an i7 maybe?). Mine is currently a Phenom 9550 which has been alright, but I feel I should up the ante if I'm going to take this seriously... Up until now I've been sort of half-assing the business side of my arch. viz but I think I may look to get some money to establish myself a bit more, get top notch gear so I can turn things around faster/easier...

I'm still waiting for those new Nvidia cards... I've heard rumors that Indigo will run better on those?
