Burst - Paper Sculpture

Post by Headroom » Sat Dec 05, 2009 6:35 am

I am trying to recreate one of Jen Stark's http://www.jenstark.com/ paper sculptures called Burst. After some modeling it started looking promising in Blender, even though a bit flat, so I started a quick test render before I went to work, hoping to see something worthwhile upon my return.

I have a few questions in respect to improving the render.

1. Regular construction paper is about 0.2-1.8 mm thick. How thin can something be in Indigo ? There seems to be some red bleeding through on one or two of the white outside leaves (for lack of a better word) that I believe should not be there. The material is a phong, so no transparency SSS etc. I am aware that the ray_ origin_nudge_distance is preset to 0.1mm. So what's the minimum thickness my virtual paper should have to result in a correct render.

2. Is there an influence on render speed to be expected if I lower ray_ origin_nudge_distance to 0.05mm , or am I correct in my current assumption that this parameter has more to do with render accuracy than with speed ?

3. What are good real-world values for construction paper for reflectance, IOR, Exponent, or is a simple diffuse material a better choice ? I just very quickly assigned materials so I could start the render before leaving the house. Currently settings are IOR=1,61 and Exponent=500.

Meanwhile I'l be improving the model that A. uses way too few sheets of paper and B. still looks too regular/organized. Then, in order to give my iMac a real workout I may try a little SSS

hmm, I'm not an expert but since no one else has responded, If you're not concerned with transparency and it is a problem resulting from too thin elements, couldn't you just increase the scene scale? Other than that, not sure I see the bleeding. The phong material's reflectiveness is causing it to reflect your light source where the surface of the paper is at the same angle from the light as your eye point. Change to a diffuse, or lower the exponent of the phong, or orbit your camera up around the light source just a little and this will go away?

Yes 500 exponent is the red bleeding. Try 50-100 for exp.
Indigo ray nudge distance 0.1mm should work.
