My WIPs

Post by neo0. » Sun Nov 08, 2009 3:41 pm

Many people have their own thread so I figured I would to. Think of this more like an indigo sketchbook, than "final renders." Or to put it another way, think of these renders as brainstorming..

Finally, I probably won't have much time on the weekend, due to my silly job... :( Buut, you can expect quite a few renders mon-thurs.

To start off, I noticed some interesting differences between bidirection MLT and bidirectional PT... First of all, I got rid of the texture like PureSpider suggested and it looks much better now.. Oddly, enough, the top of my liquid now become very dark. If you look at my previous version in the simple renderings thread, the liquid looked very normal, but now it actually seemed to be reflecting it's environment simply because I removed the bitmap from the material?

Hey Neo, first thing: I'm glad that you have opened that space for yourself, nice initiative.

Second thing, cash: you need to train your eyes, and sometimes it takes a glaze ;) When you are stating that the top of the water is now darker than it was before, I for one am seeing the contrary.

Did you manage a small distance between the glass and he plane ? Snapping one to the other would be wrong as this would result into objects interpenetration in real life (and in Indigo). 0.4mm should be double-safe; 0.2 is a bordering value and therefore slightly higher values are preferable I guess.

I'm sure you know already that glass and water must largely intersect, that's how contact is defined for dielectric materials (specular and glossy_T in Indigo).

Okay last think, sorry for being that long: with a more converged water, its color would be homogenous and look nicer.

And nice cyclo finally (that round background) !

Whoops.. I should have cleared that up.. What I did was actually add a a "roof" so the black environment didn't reach the water quite as much, but before it was pretty black..

Intended to be a reflection test with chrome balls.. Trying to get the balls to reflect each other.. but instead they reflected their own shadows, so I guess it turned out pretty neat in the end. :)

Try to guess how many light sources I used.

looks like one light source (studio hdr), rendered with mlt path tracing (no bidir).

Close.. Did you see the light source reflections on the chrome? It's actually two light sources, but yeah.. it is mlt.. I've tried out path tracing in the past and it seems kind of like it's well.. inferior.. I don't know how this could ne possible, but mlt creates very fine grain, where as path tracing makes everything.. I don't know very pixelated? This is it after a few seconds.. Notice the very course, grainy pattern.. It almost looks like a tiled, repeating pattern..

That pattern is issued from the so called QMC sampler. QMC stands for Quasi-Monte-Carlo, and that sampling distribution must be more efficient than pure Monte-Carlo (random) sampling since it is now used by Indigo. Amongst other things it allows for a very quick and homogeneous preview of the scene. Unlike MLT, path tracing (as well as bidirectional path tracing) are sampling on a per pixel basis.

Your spheres must be closer to each other if you want to see them bigger in reflections, the spherical shape is belittling any distant object reflected.

Appreciate the explanation, Ctzn. I was beginning to think I was doing something wrong with my path tracing.

Not really indigo, but here is the custom color scheme I created for my youtube profile

Custom color scheme? it's the default gray, lol.

Hell, I even have it on my channel:

It's similar, but im using different hex values. Look carefully.

You didn't notice the lighter background hue? I actually started out with the grey preset and decided that it wasn't good enough.. I actually never realized that youtube was actually letting you choose custom colors.. I hate what they've done with playlistes though.. Instead of a having a seperate, easily recognizable section, they just squished it into one thing.
