Just a random question.. In blender, Is it possibler to take a square face (one that is maybe inseted inside a larger face) and convert it to a circular face without manually moving all the points?

You want to turn a square into a circle? I dont get it :? would you mind re-explaining or providing some sort of a ... visual representation before/after of what you want mean?

I take an educated guess that he would like to create a hole or something like that.
So with my amazing mouse sketch skills I was able to do this ...

Of course if you don't delete the round part but extrude it, you'll get a pin. And in the
end I was all wrong and neo0 wanted something unexpected.

I hope I won a price. :D

Oh, that's rather easy although....I dont garantee a "perfect" circle so to speak.

It requires one of the BMesh builds however. basically this is how you do it:
1. Open the default scene (with a BMesh branch build, I used DingTo's BMesh build rev 23318)
2. With cube selected, Tab to edit mode (face selection) and select only top face
3. Press E to extrude, Right-click to "let go"
4. Then scale inwards to a bit more than half of the original face.
5. Press W --> Subdivide (twice)
6. Back to vertex selection mode, select the 9 vertices in the middle and press X (to delete)
7. Grab the 12 vertices on the outside edges of the "hole" except for the corner ones.
8. Scale outwards a bit
9. Press A to deselect everything, then only select the middle vertex what used to be each side.
10. Scale outwards once again

You should have something close to a circle. It may look long due to the amount of steps, but I redid it after writing the post, and it takes less than 45 seconds to complete, and to be honest I'm still not used to some of the hotkey changes in blender 2.5 (such as x to delete, the "delete" key used to work as well while right now it seems to be disabled).

Anyway, here was my result (hopefully this is what you were looking for if not maybe this'll be useful for someone else):

P.S: After re-reading my post I noticed this could actually be done with a non-bmesh build but it creates a whole lot more geometry as if you want the subdivision to actually be "clean" you have to pretty much subdivide all the face of the cube at the same time which really sucks.

Wings 3D has a great plugin (as much as I don't like Wings) called circularize where you select a closed, square edge loop and when you drag it moved all the verts so that the edge loop becomes circular.. It would be great to see a similar plugin for blender.. :)

Borg - that a screenie of the latest build? If so - looks promising.

There is still a lack of technical modeling tool. Somebody knows if "curve modelling" has been improve this way? and listing?

Not the latest build but a very recent one yes.

AFAIK neo0. there was a script for blender versions (prior to 2.5) with a bunch of circle tools in it, maybe the person behind it will update it for 2.5

How does blender perform with high polygon counts.. I typically model in the 200,000 - 300,000 polygon range (only because of excessive smoothing heh...)

I think the easiest way for you to find that out would be to head over to http://graphicall.org and grab a recent release of Blender 2.5 and model a random piece of geometry with a wacked amount of polygons in it.

Now of course the performance may not be as good as the "final product", since these are development versions. Or you could wait for the first official release candidate (I think it's due next month not sure)
