Is it a good idea? What do you think?
I think it is a good idea, but I don't see how it could become prioritary today
The feature would certainly be easier to implement in exporters for an host app having advanced rendering features, if it's not there already.
While in my opinion exporter writers have a certain degree of freedom in the way they are presenting the interface, it's also good that Indigo is implementing things in one robust and finally simple way. That's what makes it affordable for exp. writers I believe, or it would dig the gap even more.
Code: Select all
(1 - blendFunction) * input[0] + blendFunction * input[1]

ok questions...
this is different from the existing situation of (A+B)+(C+D)
in that you want (((A+B)+C)+D) is that right?
do you need blend maps for each combo? (does anyone use blend maps?)
I presume you want the relative levels of the others to auto adjust if you increase the prominence of one material? - thinking sliders here...
will you always want to blend 4 mats in this fashion or is 3 important as well?
can you give an 'real' example of a material you want to do like this please..

4 mats would be super simlple ( (A+B)+(C+D) ) but 3 or any value, not being a power of 2, will be a bit more complicated... (as said, a weight is needed then...
(A*(x-1)+B*x)(y-1)+C*y
to get a 1:1:1 blend in that case, you'd need x=0.5 and y=0.333 (1/3) but I'm not sure, what's needed to get a weighted blend, so to say taking into account that the nth material doesn't have 1/2 as 1:1:...:1 - value but rather 1/n...
