Very impressive image, congratulations!
it reminds me, however, of this image: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread. ... 1&t=430849 which won a CG Award in the past, and maybe should get credit for the idea

Thanks for your comments,

@mrmonkey & BbB:Yea, quite the same concept and the image from Pawel Hynek is really wonderful. To be honnest I started this modelling last week without having this image in mind and yesturday I remembered that something similar was done, I didn't remembered exactely and I found it in the 3D choice gallery (well deserved). And right, very similar, so what to do ? I hesitated but a lot of work was already done so I finally decided to publish it anyway. Too bad but I'm quite happy with the result.

@Kwez: Yes, I think the landscape is better.

Awesome, as usual !

If you have a little time, a tutorial about how to make dirty textures like you often do would be, I'm sure, greatly appreciated by the community :D

   absolute fantastic :!: :!: :!:
even if your image concept is similare to the CG Award winning image ....
i think you made much more out of it and somehow your images tels much more and evokes emotions which is difficult to achieve in CG in my opinion 8)
your images start where words ends :)

i would like to know how many textures/maps you used for one material and what are the max/min size resolution of the bitmap textures

which HDRI you use for illuminating the scene ( is it a free available HDRI ) ?

Greetings Patrick

Thanks again to all for your comments,

As asked by some of you, here are several images about wire and UV mapping textures, I won't do a tutorial for now as I think that many tutorials about UV mapping are available on the web and they are really well done. By the way, as already stated by others, the most important process in UV mapping is the unfold job and a good usage of seams may really help on getting the better UV map. Once you get a nice UV map, there is no secret, you need a good base texture and a nice image editor like Gimp or Photoshop to enhance the texture by adding the required details like I did for the head, body or battery. For the additional scratches around holes in the head and the body, I used a wacom tablet, very useful as much more precise than the mouse. Usually I try to make the textures myself with a hires digicam but this requires a lot of time so I also pick some of them on free sites like www.cgtextures.com which is really great and I would like to thank them for providing such nice material.

The light was produced by an HDRI image I got on a CD I received from 3D World Mag, so this is not free but a lot of free HDRI images are available on the web.

Thx for the screenshots, it helps.

I thought you were using exponent maps, but it seems that you don't. The results with only albedo maps are impressive !
