[REQ] Gpu PS3 news

Big problem of rendering software like Indigo is time spent for rendering.
Architectural studios or production want time shortly. :D

Gpu computation or new PS3 with linux is possible solution !!?
What do you think if Indigo is the first to utilize this?

There is news i see on www.gpgpu.org abaut new software product.

This software permit to develop application with GPU or Cell computation.

Probably this is not import news , but ....
I hope Indigo rendering will be the faster... :D :D

not needed, there is a (almost)full version of the linux os being made for the PS3, instal wine and get your render on!

It's 256 XDR 256mb + 256 VRAM but XDR 10 time faster of ddr2 :D :D :D and the OS "linux" is E-17 more more............ little than XP or VISTA 8)

I don't think (hope) to utilize PS3 for main PC but for cooperative network PC.

P.S. PS3 in 10 time faster than PC. :lol:

don't forget about virtual memory, windows can utilize it for things like 3D rendering, I'm sure Linux has its own implementation as well.

256mb of XDR - 6mb -> 250mb for rendering :lol:
1gb - VISTA 768 MB -> for rendering 256 :D

Psst.

Don't let the high price of the PS3 fool you.

you're better off buying a mobo, processor, case and ram (like say, I'm doing, building a renderfarm slowly).

You can get a real computer for $500, and use it for many things.


The PS3 isn't some sort of magical device that runs all code faster than any existing computer; it actually requires a lot of work to get great performance out of.

Next up:

GPGPU is *almost* there. Right now, with current DX9 boards, there are still too many limits. DX 10 boards that are coming out soon will be a large step (virtualized memory, etc.) towards doing some general purpose computing via GPU, which are highly parallel by nature.
Even then, though, you're opening up a can of worms.

I would like to see a Turing-complete GPU (yeah, yeah, I know) within a few years.

10 HDTV channels simultaneously is a great example of what DOES work well on the PS3: streaming, high bandwidth, in order data, with few data dependencies across threads.


Path tracing is only one of those.

It is, for the most part, nice and parallel. :)

I personally wouldn't use the GPU to render with, (he said, trying to get the thread back on topic). I try to emulate the industry way of doing things, that is to render in the background on my machine, and leave the GPU free to model the next scene.

ita333: I see you like enlightenment. What do you think about xfce4 or fluxbox (or any of the *box's). I only got enlightenment to use a small amount of memory by turning everything off. It seemed to me that even the smallest things and its memory footprint was the same as anyother micro windowmanager.

hey people if some one crack the lock of ps3 and load different o.s than linux (and this linux of ps3 is locked) well then we can talk about rendering on ps3....and i think there is no great diference in speed...tha ps3 cpu is a Risc cpu not a real sse/sse2 mmx ect instruction set....i dont think is efficient this rendering on this machine.. :roll:
