Space movie(Blender rendered)

Post by Neobloodline » Sat Dec 08, 2007 10:22 am

I plan on rendering something cool in Indigo one day once I figure out animation clearly in blender...

I made this just for fun and to try out a couple of techniques I was reading about. My next movie will be longer and incorporate some of the compositing effects they've added lately to the cvs builds.

Nice! I really liked the closeup on the moon.

Thank you! Which web browser are you using? The text moves much faster and smoother in firefox than in ie7. I wonder why...

I use FF. It's pretty smooth and the speed is perfect.

Well that was kinda the point of the exercise. I'm not sure how to use transparency maps etc. with Indigo... I used very complex shaders and texture layers to create the earth. Even though I probably didn't showcase it very well  I need to use higher resolution textures to I think to really make it like I envisioned it.

that's a cool animation, but isn't the bump map of the moon 'negative'? there seams to be bubbles and not craters.

like kram says, an indigo version would be nice ;)

The textures of the moon are complicated because they are actually from real pictures of the moon itself and contain shadows already. Also I may have inverted the bumps it's certainly possible  Usually I just mess around with settings till I see something I like then I stamp it good to go :P

I was going to report that... also the Earth sphere res is too low at poles.

I think that's a good animation project for Indigo, it may render quick if you don't use too much transparency maps...

How do I go about using transparency mapping in Indigo? Kind of easy in Blender, you just load up your black/white transparency map and click the correct button  I have color maps, bump maps, specularity maps, transparency maps etc. that I have to figure out how to carry over to an indigo project. I'm going to put some time into it when I can get myself to stop playing Crysis. :D

My sphere meshes were pretty dense I thought. There are several spheres layered with different shaders, each of which are subdivided, I can't remember if I smoothed them or not though. Each of the subdivided spheres came from one original and was duplicated/resized. I don't really notice anything at the poles, but I'm guessing it's probably that my texture resolution for the moon is much nicer than the ones for the earth. If you look close and pause the animation of the earth you can kind of make out a separate layer around the cloud layer that disperses the backlight. I also have a layer that has very small emittance of lights that you can see on the dark side.

I tried to run a frame through Indigo and it says blah blah blah.. only 3 component jpegs are supported.

Try the Shpere primitive shipped with Indigo... not sure if you can map them tho.

For transparency you want to BLEND a null material and the (ie) clouds material/texture using the transparency map. For the how to I can't help much, not on blender.

SmartDen already did such a render (not animated and in an earlier version, though) And yes, you can texturemap spheres ;)

The stars are added in post process, the rest is pure Indigo :)
(The cloud-layer is one big alpha-mapped texture, the Sun poorly is missing, here...)

I guess, he still has the scene. Then, you'd only need to add the movement and wait, like... well... many hours per frame^^ (I think, that image backed 3 days, if I remember correctly, but I can't tell for sure, any more)

Yea, I've seen that image before and it's a nice attempt. Not to pick on it or anything but he's missing a lot of features that go into a believable earth like an atmosphere and different reflectance and effects of the water, ground and cloudcover. It may be hard to figure out how to add all these together with Indigo but I'm sure it can be done. Maybe not for a video though unless I can get a gigantic renderfarm to cook it or something.
