right then givers :D ...
now I have been trying to raise these conical dust lines and I cant seem to get them to show :?
in this doodle (which I have downsized here - hence the jaggies) I expected to create cones as I sketched in here in white for each light...
there are obviously IES cones made intersecting on the orange wall but no dust effect in the atmosphere :roll:
so I ask again if this is possible or am I just not doing this well - incorrect settings/ situation :?

Yeah you won't see the light cones in open space without a dusty atmosphere.

well there is a dusty atmosphere made there just as if I was making a dust for the sun to show.. :roll: :?
perhaps the lights are too dim or small or the edge indistinct in comparison to the sun or something :(

Ah sorry I miss-read what you said. I would guess you just need to crank the scattering up a notch or three until they start to show up.

Here's an example known working dusty atmosphere material to check yours against in case there is actually something mis-configured in the mat (expects realistic scene scale):

Code: Select all

	<medium>
		<name>Atmosphere</name>
		<precedence>2</precedence>
		<basic>
			<ior>1</ior>
			<cauchy_b_coeff>0</cauchy_b_coeff>
			<absorption_coefficient_spectrum>
				<rgb>
					<rgb>0 0 0</rgb>
					<gamma>2.2</gamma>

				</rgb>
			</absorption_coefficient_spectrum>
			<subsurface_scattering>
				<scattering_coefficient_spectrum>
					<uniform>
						<value>0.05</value>
					</uniform>
				</scattering_coefficient_spectrum>
				<phase_function>
					<uniform/>
				</phase_function>
			</subsurface_scattering>
		</basic>
	</medium>
	<material>
		<name>Atmosphere</name>
		<specular>
			<transparent>true</transparent>
			<internal_medium_name>Atmosphere</internal_medium_name>
		</specular>
	</material>
Hope that helps :)

ok found it :oops:
dust box normals pointing the wrong way :roll: :? :wink: :D
not quite the conical shapes I imagined though...maybe its not right..need to check that next

Maybe the material is scattering too much?

either that, or you used a pretty much uniform IES.... or...

I can see the shape of your fog-cube, due to scattering...
try to scale it up, 10 times ;) (The camera isn't even in the fog, here, is it?)

ok, strange...

Uhm, do you use Indigo 1.0.2?
try .3 ;)

But ok, both are close to similar, I guess...

yay found time this evening..
and got it functioning :) partly my script fault :wink:
made the lamp meshes a little bigger too..
for posterity this its an sss value of 0.01 which is a little strong I think :roll:
0.0075 would be better
the obvious thing is I think that despite the uniformly smoky atmosphere the light follows the ies distribution so there is no scattering for the first 300mm or so - at least with this pfofile -which is somewhat wrong I think :?
I wonder too about having no real way to control the light output other than making somewhat crude adjustments with with camera exposure etc...
anyway thanks for the assistance 8)

You might just have to let this render for a lot longer. Things will start to take shape after a while.

IES more or less already have efficiency output given in their Data. Ono didn't add a multiplier, yet.
There's nothing, at the beginning, because the beam is very small, there, and you only would see it, if it'd be brighter ;)
