It's a blend, using a weightmap, of two identical mats except one has a slightly higher IOR.

WytRaven wrote:@mzungu: so maybe you can download them but then where would the sense of satisfaction be in doing that? I don't use any models made by others...only my own.

I am currently very much enjoying the challenge of modeling pneumatic cylinders using nothing but hand wound polys (no booleans or other such tools) and the bevel center script in blender 8)

Real men model with polys  MoI is for pussies

...or some might say I'm just masochistic :o
I'd say that's pretty close! <but the bevel script is cheating! > ... and doing it just for the "sense of satisfaction", too! My employer (and a bunch of others, I'd guess) would love to meet up with you, dood!

Its kind of a crapshoot. You have to find the parts you want, then hope and pray they have 3D models for them. Just keep an eye out for the little CAD logo or the "3-D Model" link in the left panel (for example on part number 3749T7 - type that in the search box, upper left.) One big hint: don't mess with that Actify Spinfire crap - that's only an online viewer. Go straight to the "Download" link at the top of the page.
WytRaven wrote:... The next version of Blender (2.50) is supposedly going to feature an expansion of the NURBS features. So I will move on to learning the fine art of NURBS once Blender allows me to :)

I would imagine the Blender team is taking a good hard look at MoI right now as an example of NURBS modelling done right.
Don't hold your breath for this. AFAIK, no one is on the horizon who is familiar enough with this (and motivated enough) to take the task on. Unless you have some news/insider info which will get my hopes raised yet again? (Only to have them crushed once more, I'm sure... :x But, hey, what are dreams for, eh?)

I had a name...can't remember it but in the stuff I was reading people were jumping for joy that not only was this person coming back but had already created a branch of the blender code and had started work. From what I could tell this time it's for real.

thanks alot guys. here is the first wip and the reference pic (actually modelling direct from my keyboard :P )
