Troubles with 3DS files

Post by urusei » Wed Aug 22, 2007 10:12 am

Hello everyones, please excuse any typos, I'm not an english speaking person.

I made some tests with indigo and some 3DS chairs I found on TURBOSQUID, juste to import a Chair in the middle of plane, but there are always errors at the rendering, the console keeps telling me for more than one file that it can't link to texture #26 or something like this.

Anyone of you has that kind of problem with 3DS files?
Is ther any free 3DS editor allowing you to change the textures, modify the file of else... Do 3DS files carry all the objects textures inside the file? Or it's just bad luck with corrupted 3DS files?

Are you doing anything special to obtain those beautiful office scenes into the gallery?

Thanks for any help.

Do you have a material named "texture #26" defined in your Indigo scene?
I think 3ds file may be using a material with that name.

I was refering to a soft allowing to see inside a file, the textures, meshs, verticles...

Well I though all the materials were inside the 3DS file, do I have to recreate all of them into indigo to be able to import a 3DS file?

yes, thats usually what 3d applications do.

Yes, Indigo only gets a material name from 3ds. Material itself has to be defined in Indigo scene file.

ok, 3ds is a very old format and some modellers forget it's limitations.

3ds does not have the material image file embedded like you can with some other apps, so generally you'll get a zip file with the .3ds and some jpgs, but (it's a big but!) 3ds only supports the old dos file names in 8.3 format. If the modeller didn't account for this when naming his textures in 3d studio then you'll have to spend time working out the correct names for each texture.

If you're using blender and the 3ds imports correctly, afterwards blendigo should pick up the texture names, but 9 times out of ten you have to set up the mats / textures....
