[REQ] Indigo append function (like blender)

Post by snorky » Sat Sep 19, 2015 7:14 pm

hi,
can we have the append funcion (like blender) with indigo to use materials and objects of a saved igs?

because sometimes, when I have already exported the scene to indigo, I realize that I would like to add an object into the scene but I don't want to open sketchup/blender/c4d/etc. again...

is it possible?

:)

Hi Snorky, what exactly would this do?
Combine all the objects and materials from two scenes into one scene?

use a igs file like a library to add (append in blender) materials, objects and so on
Naturally objects must be placed in the scene (interactively)

Hi Snorky, it is not too difficult to hand edit what you want, I think you will handle it. However that is out of the top of my head, please bear with me in case of inaccuracy !

Just export the new object alone and open the resulting IGS in a text editor.
- remove render_settings, camera and environment tags. Basically you want only the new materials and geometries in.
- change the <scene> tag to <scenedata>
- save as IGS

In the global IGS scene file, add this include tag:

Code: Select all

<include>
	<pathname>C:/path/to/the/new.igs</pathname>
</include>
Save this file too and try to render it.

thanks!
yes, it is simple... but I don't want to merge two scenes, just add an object (and materials) in a specific place.

In c4d indigo at least one would get some conflicts regarding object ids, sadly.

I've done the hand editing thing quite a bit for certain scenes and it works just fine, but I think what Snorky is getting at is something a little more "on the fly" which I could get behind too.

I'd imagine an append or include option that would bring up a new scene outliner window for the chosen igs scene from which you could select elements you want to merge with your current scene. I think it would be useful and way more efficient than re-exporting just for certain elements and then hand editing the files.

I think Indigo should be able to manage this, assigning UID's just like with linked materials ?

You can have two scenes and different objects with the same object id.

Understood, I assumed that Indigo would manage this issue when using include statements.

[rant] Never found the specs sheet for the "new" Indigo scene description though... all I could was mix old and new descriptions and get Indigo crashing for the matter... too tedious to guess the whole thing out, even impossible in some cases to get Indigo provide an output for a thing that you could not define in the first place.
