Tom Dixon Lights

Post by bubs » Thu Jul 24, 2014 3:39 am

I recently modeled and textured a set of Tom Dixon's very cool 'Beat' lights. I was pretty happy with them, so I thought I'd share the love!

SketchUp files and texture can be found here;

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dv0nsifwhhq7 ... =153384883

You will have to redefine the Linked IGM paths for the materials, and you may have to play with the light powers. I have it high to avoid noise when rendering, but turned the power down to 0.1 / 0.2 for the scenes below

Everything done by me, so royalty / licence free for use for whatever you like!

Enjoy! :D

You're very welcome :D
I did notice I had uploaded a slightly old model with the cables totally straight, so I have updated the above link to the correct model.

TBH I thought the straight cables looked better - the gravitation would straighten them out.

There's just no pleasing some people! :wink: :lol:
You can put the straight ones back in if you want, I won't hold it against you!

Wonderful lamps and very kind of you to share them!

..I'd be also a little interested about the modeling/mapping process :mrgreen: Do you mind sharing that with very basic steps? No hurry, just when you have some time, if you can..

Thank you again!

A quick tip bubs, for uniform emitters like bulbs keep the polycount for the mesh low for best performance ;)

@Pibuz - No problem;

1. Import an elevation (I found one that had dimensions) and scale it correctly.
2. Draw a base line the correct width and then a vertical centre line up from this. Then using just line and curve tools draw the outline of half the lamp.
3. Extrude this a certain amount (does not matter how far).
4. Use 'Round Corners' plugin on the external edges.
5. I used 5mm radius on the 'shoulder' of the lamp and 1mm top and bottom, but whatever looks correct...
6. Delete the extrusion leaving the plain with rounded corners. * You could just draw small arcs on the original plane to get the same effect, I just prefer doing it this way.*
7. Select the outer edges and use 'offset' to define the thickness of the shell.
8. Delete the remainder of the plane that is not required.
9. Extrude again and use 'Round Corners' to curve inner edges at top and bottom. Again delete the extrusion as point 6.
10. Draw a circle centred on your original base line. Use a high number of faces for best results, I used 100 for these.
11. Select the circle and then click on 'Follow Me' tool and select the shell plane we have drawn.
12. Hey presto!

For the mapping I used Fredo06's ThruPaint plugin with the deformation setting. Doesn't always work but it's very useful for relatively simple shapes.

Hope this helps.
