In indigo 3 the GPU is still too little used! why?

Post by spaceuniversal » Wed Aug 31, 2011 12:54 am

I v.3.0.12 of Indigo.
Honestly I was very disappointed .. a simple room with 3 mobile (in sketchup) and basic texture made me lose a lot of time ..
My Intel Core i7 920 was squeezed to the maximum (reached 98 degrees constant), the NVIDIA (GTX is a 275) was used very little and despite all this, the rendering time has been very .. I had to stop because I thought in an overheating of the CPU ... :(
I really do not understand .. yet, in your site, talk so much about optimizing with CUDA and GPU ..

and it was a simple frame .. I dare not think of an animation.
there is a lot improve in cuda and open cl

strength and courage :)

1. The latest version is 3.0.14
2. Did you use exit portals ?
3. What render mode did you use. Only single directional Path Tracing currently is GPU supported.
4. Did you have window panes in your windows and if so, did you use glass acceleration ?
5. If your CPU gets hot thats an indication that Indigo uses all available CPU resources. That's a good thing!

A little more information about your scene set-up and a few questions from you side may have prevented some of your disappointment and frustration ;-)

Indigo uses GPU acceleration, but it is not a GPU renderer ! It is normal that the CPU throttles the GPU when rendering with Indigo.

Historically GPUs could not always handle all the operations necessary to sustain Indigo rendering methods, things are changing nowadays I bet.
obsolete asset

first of all thanks for the quick replies:). :D
my scene sketch up is very simple: it is a simple room with no windows, with 3 mobile, a bed and a desk made in a very basic and fast, this is a test.

I rendered leaving all the default settings, I checked only the voice that enables the acceleration of my NVIDA GPU.

What do you recommend for a good rendering? I am a beginner. in the future I hope very much that the GPU is used more, but I understand that the present state is very difficult to govern these types of tasks .. by chance know if there is a way to render in the cloud?
Thanks

In interior scenes PT isn't as strong as it is on exterior scenes, although I've seen scenes where it surprasses the other modes. I've seen a decent speed bump with this GPU release and am sure that with time, more and more GPU will be used... always with the awesome image quality of Indigo. :)

Gazie @ headroom, @ctzn, and @ pixie! I wanted to ask you just one more thing: what is the maximum tolerable temperature for a CPU like the Core i7 when these types of rendering?
1: I have to worry if you get the cpu for 2 minutes even at constant 98 degrees?

2:and rendering complex animations like you as you act? you take lots of breaks?

You should check your cooling, because I regularly run my i7 at full capacity overnight without any problems or overheating. It should be able to handle it just fine...

98 degrees is way too high. Something sure is wrong with your cooling.

Wrong.
98°C are normal under 100% load with intel stock cooling; my i7 870 did that, too.

@StompinTom
you remember at what temperature the sensor signals for your CPU and rendering at night? you can do a check with the freeware "real temp"..

however it is certainly a problem of cooling. I do I mount a normal intel stock cooling provided by Intel with the Core i7. so I have to mount any other fans ...

Interesting. My 920 doesn't go over 80 even when 24h under full load with stock cooling.

Heck, get some scythe stuff
No more than 70°C here but I guess I could blow my brain out with that thing :D
Zalman also rocks.

Intel stock coolers are crap for i7. Mine can easily reach 100 C with the stock cooler, and I don't believe myself that that is a good idea. In fact, neither does the BIOS and it shuts the machine down. I got a little self-contained water/radiator thing for it and now I'm not so scared to use all my horsepower :)
