Dunno how good the comparison can be, and I hate to put those on the table... but imagine you have to wear a gun and you have two to choose from; identical ones but one doesn't have a safety. Wich would you take with you ?

Okay, most often no bullet would be lost and finally this is all about renders :) The standing point to me is that the choice should belong to the user (safety as a permanent option).

If the safety was off then the stop icon could be of a red tint, green otherwise.

Let me say this again: Just put the darn Stop button off to the side and then we'll see if we're happy with it.

Of course we could also make a Pause/stop button out of the Stop button. First click pauses (Icon changes) and then second click stops.

Even better having this behavior with play/pause :)

You could even use space bar as used else(every)where... ;)

The render/pause (play/pause) may be similar to function in existing applications and because of that may be more intuitive but it still would not address the initial problem, which revolved around the Stop button.
Unless of course I am misunderstanding your proposals entirely.

Without a pause button you don't have button which you might inadvertently mistake with, just a kill button. If you use the space bar to pause as you do for vlc, etc... you can't stop th render as you simply won't click any button by doing so.
