Ark (spaceship)

Post by neo0. » Sun Oct 17, 2010 1:42 pm

After trying numerous freely available textures (and not being happy with any of them), I went ahead and made my own.

Suggestions on everything welcome..

Looks too big to be in Earth's atmosphere, I think you need to render it in space!

You could use the texture as a faint displacement instead, that would figure panels better. Subdivisions smoothing should be off then. As a bump map it would be better slightly blurred, it's a bit too contrasty for an albedo map. To my taste that is :)

Update. Added more detail to both the top and bottom of the ship.

There's a weird grid going on in those two last ones! Does it clear if you render longer?

Not really. The image cleared after 15 minutes or so and I let it render for another 45 mins and it didn't change much. The ship was only scaled to around 800 feet.

We've recently improved the numeric precision of Indigo's camera calculations, which could resolve this issue.

I'm not following this, in what way does this help?

Regarding the strange box pattern over neo0s last renders...

Slight update. I wanted to give it a more armored, industrial look.

Please give this envMap a try for a better space look: http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive/dow ... lkyway.zip
More reflections for the surface could enhance the look to.

Yes, I love you! I have been looking for a space HDR for many months. Thank you, Zom-B!

As for the reflections, I am going for for a dull, painted metal look..

Use a very low exponent for a dark phong then ! Removing totally the specular component of an object is like removing the color from a picture (to me) ! Only that even b&w pictures are featuring specularity so it's even worse realism wise :)

You are making good progresses neo0. !

The environment map seems to be a little bleary and out of focus, but on the whole it looks much nicer. Does anyone else here know of any other space HDRs?
