bump 0.xxx

Post by losbellos » Tue May 13, 2008 3:22 am

Hello,
I thought it would be good in the next release that the bump map multiplier accepts float values. So that x.001 would be possible without manually editing the material file. Maybe the other map multipliers as well. I didn't check it.
Thanks a lot.

Hey losbellos,
While creating the mats I used the idea of making the parameters as similar to 3ds Max natives as i could. Decimal bump seemsa bit overkill for me at first.
Do you have any real life (visual?) examples of why do you need such a precision?

HI suv...may i give u an example.....
i have a scene and im working a bit out of scale....i have setup my mats lights ect with this scale....everything looks fine and ok.....i try to rescale the scene with "normal" scale "meters" for example....and i take very anomaly results..and not tweakable........any way tha point is......even with this wrong scale.....when i use bump maps for my materias...i set the value to 1.....and indigo gives me huge amount of bump(i think becouse of the wrong scale.....)
if i open the materials.igs the bump value is like this
0.1
....and i must change manualy this parameter for all my bumps
to 0.001 to get propper results.....
so the point is...if in this strange situation will have floating point on bumb just i set the bump the material to 0.1....and the maxingo will exports the 0.001....
hope u understand and not confuse u!!

Yeah, The wood and the spots on the cup on the image gallery.
1 means 0,1 in the scene file. So it was quite large, but I have to be honest the scale was a litte out.
Still would be so nice to have it, and anyway its just to change a word, from integer to float ;-) Also when I am in meter, 0,1 would mean 10 centimeters, that would be the max bump - corresponding the white color in the bitmap(am I right?). Thats quite much, because then I would have to change my bitmap to have the scale right and might loose some detail.
(for example if I want to have 3 mm bumps, then I can use only 1/3 of the greyscale to represent my bump.)

Strange. I've never had this kind of problem.
It's the first time I hear about it.
I still think that you should try to use the correct units when possible though.

yes the correct units is the right.....i have try much to reconfigure mu setup and i never take the result of the incorrect setup.....even with lights, dof, colors tone......so its worth to have thes flexibility....
