Subsurface scattering

Post by dembooed » Mon Apr 20, 2009 6:19 am

Hi,

I try to understand SSS in Indigo/Blendigo but I can get just black material.
I ve tried to find any tutorials or examples about Subsurface scattering but without success.

Could you give me any solution or source of knowledge about SSS ?

Peace!

In blender edit mode select object & hit ctrl+n.
Or rise max depth in blendigo.

SSS is slow. I renderd 230h to 6000spp @ 1680x1050.

Select SPECULAR material type, don't forget to turn on 'Transparent' button(or select spec type 'glossy transparent'), select desired RGB absorption color and set RGB gain about 5, turn on 'Subsurface Scattering' and select Scatter type and Phase function. To get proper effect, the mesh should be closed (like a sphere or suzanne) and normals should be directed outwards. Don't forget to select bidir.

@SmartDen: is it possible to make "blended material" with two SSS materials ?

no, at least not with the specular material. indigo doesnt allow to blend two delta distibution materials (iirc). but, this should be possible by using two glossy transparent materials with relatively high exponent.... maybe.

edit: tested, works

edit: be aware that this is probably not recommended and that i suspect it not to be valid in the aspect of physical correctness at all :P

It's me again :)
Guys, do you have any tests of SSS's settings to see difference between combination of values ?

Peace!
