Tips to reduce fireflies?

Hi guys,

Working on another scene I notice that wherever sunsky hits any glossy or nk material lots of fireflies get generated and take forever to clean up.


I'm using bidir+MLT with exit portals outside the windows. Any ideas on how to reduce them?

Following Zom-b's tip of removing the exit portals is producing a less noisy image. Will post my progress soon

Indeed removing the portals produced an image with less fireflies (specially on the chrome material of the chair). The lamps on the wall are reflecting some fireflies on the glass material of the window on the left.


Other things I'm trying out on this image:
-IES lamps
-Better bump mapping on the floor
-Different lighting/material schemes

Still so much to learn, but I'm loving how "controllable" Indigo is

regarding the Fireflies the forum searh is indeed your best sources of knowledge
Higher SuperSampling for less Fireflies helps too...

BTW: your cloudy background image doesn't fit to the sunlight in the scene

Thanks Zom-b You're right about the background image, I'll look for a better one, it's just that the city and the height the picture was taken from was something I felt fitted the interior, lol.

Question: Where do you set higher super sampling options?

Comment: nice portfolio! Is all your work rendered in Indigo? Including the animations? Is it too complicated to render animations with Indigo? Do images change a lot in their sampling from frame to frame? This is what worries me the most when thinking of animation with Indigo. That and the very long render times. I see you got similar PC specs as mine. How much does rendering with 3 machines like that speed up animations?

Yes 95% of the stuff is rendered in Indigo, also the animation!
The noise changes between the images are best thing that can happen, since by that you can denoise the animation with a temporal denoise very easily

How much does rendering with 3 machines like that speed up animations?

3 systems = 3 times the speed
There is some little CPU extra time for the master for the merging of incoming slave data.

Go to render panel, scroll down => Supersamples (be aware that supersampling is quite RAM-intensive, usually 4-5 gives quite good results already)

Thank you Polinalkrimizei! I almost couldn't find it! lol. You have to change the "Filtering" option to "Custom" for it to appear:


Here's the image so far:

I switched the floor tile and the wall concrete direction, rotated the rug 90 degrees, and changed the background to one more according to the kind of lighting in the scene. I still need to leave the render "cook" for some more samples for the glass to be clearer and get a cleaner background. But I'm enjoying working with Indigo very much.

I'm very excited about Indigo Renderer 4, but I haven't found much info about it. Is it going to be very different from 3? I just purchased 3 and I'm only getting related and comfortable with it after a week of fiddling with its options. I hope 4 will be an easy transition. I really look forward to working more with GPU rendering. Is there an estimate release date?

About your image atm, there are two things that catch my attention: your background image seems underexposed considering how bright the sun appears to be shining. Also - about your floor - there's nothing worse than the combination too high bump value + low res bump texture.

@OnoSendai: thanks for taking the time to reply and letting us know about Indigo 4's current state. No hurries, the dev team must take the time required for Indigo 4 to be a software gem But I can't deny I'm eagerly looking forward to working with it.
@Oscar J: Thanks for the observations, all the comments you guys have made have helped me understand Indigo's workflow better. I'll make the background image brighter to make it match the interior illumination. About the bump map, is it better to simply reduce the amount/scale of the bump or instead get a higher res version of both the diffuse+bump textures?
