Joe, SSS does work. You need to turn the gain up. A lot. I guess your scenes were of a larger scale or something. 1*10^0.0 doesn't look to big to me. TURN UP YOUR GAIN ;)

that thing is 6*6*6 (~) cm big.
You're scattering once per meter, at average.
(Dunno, if that actually is correct, to know it exact, ask Ono)
this mesh needs about... 10 to propperly show a FEW of the effect ;)

no, that's ridiculous. i've never used an SSS gain of over 50.
as for the slider values going up to 1000000000*10^100 - WTF?!
(also going down to 0*10^-100).
now that we have an exponent, the value only needs to go to 10.0 (or, arguably, 1.0)

the old preview scenes (and final renders) worked just fine. this is a problem with the new preview scenes.

1*10^0.0 = 1 D'oh!
paper for example would look too transparent with gain 50

Joe, try the exact settings you show in your screenshot, but change the Absorption Gain to 50 and the SSS Uniform Value to 50. Leave the multiplier at 10^0.0. That should work.

Dougal, you do need extremely high scattering for things like wax, skin, plastic, etc if they are on a small scale or very thin. Otherwise, they'll just be like tracing paper or almost see-through. Maybe a million is a bit much ;)

Ok, Thanks to DaveC and some step by step guidance  through the chat I was able to get SSS to look properly, I did just the same settings as he mentions above and this is what I got.

So Gain and Value must be set at higher levels, not like before....

Thanks DaveC! :D

1.000.000 already is quite high SSS, even for very non transparet stuff...
I guess, you'd need that much SSS, when rendering stones :P

0.0000001 is so small, that you wont see anything at a 300³ m³ object, I guess...

I think exp between 3-4 as a value would already be enough ;)

no problem :D
I just saw, that there are 2 "Diffuse" Mats.
You should change one to "standard"...
And maybe, the colour that you define, there is automatically the stadard diffuse colour :D

never mind, I was confused by the first "Diffuse"...
One is the mat, that's just used xD

But some of my Mats, that are Diffuse, get

Code: Select all

Warning: material "___" has no Indigo material definitions
I didn't change the standard setting to them.
