Possibility to render spherical images?

Post by galinette » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:06 pm

Dear all,

Is it possible to render "spherical" images? We could do for instance indigo-generated envmaps or QuicktimeVR pictures.

It is possible to render several pictures by rotating the camera and stitch them, but can it be done directly, for exemple in one lat/lon spherical EXR?

QuicktimeVR image of interiors rendered with indigo could be awesome.

I requested this back in the times when Ono was on IRC still.
All he responded was something like "build a script for rendering the faces of a cubemap"
So I doubt this will ever be implemented...

Alex, back then, when Ono was still on IRC, Indigo wasnt commercial. Times change. So how would you know?

Rendering spehrical images, he told me, is easy to implement, but could not be used with bidirectional pathtracing. I'll bug nick to get that feature in 2.4 or 2.6 :)

Sweet cuz with a cube environment map, you'd get weird darkening because of camera vignetting which isn't disable-able, as far as I know.

There is the solution to shoot a virtual probe, but Indigo doesn't seem to output EXRs (it used to, this was requested back). One might create an HDR from multiple tonemapped images tho.

Environment renders would be great !

I know blendigo has a save as untonemapped EXR button under system > Image saving options.
Anyone know how/if this works?

Indeed... now how about <save_tonemapped_exr> and <save_untonemapped_exr> ?

After 10mn using both, only the png/igi pair has been written (multiple times)

Code: Select all

Done 89350000.00000 samples (290.85286 samples per pixel)
149228.53332 samples / second (6.70113 micro-seconds / sample)
Saving Indigo image (.igi) to 'C:/work/3d/Indigo//renders/untitled.igs.igi'
	done.
Saving tone-mapped PNG to 'C:/work/3d/Indigo//renders/untitled.igs.png'
	Done.
------------------------------------------------
Total render time elapsed: 10 m, 9 s
Done 90850000.00000 samples (295.73568 samples per pixel)
149168.43988 samples / second (6.70383 micro-seconds / sample)
but no exr created today were found onto my disks ... I'll test the flag.
