Displacement map painting tool..?
Displacement map painting tool..?
I thought it would be neat if indigo had a seperate tool that allowed you to paint maps photoshop style (exponent, bump, displacement, etc.) This would be for organic, uneven surfaces like water. You would get a brush (like the brush tool in photoshop) and a you would be able to choose the size and strength. After that you could simply paint the maps directly onto your object, zbrush style. It would automatically create the UV sets and export them back to your app of choice.
Re: Displacement map painting tool..?
uhm. bodypaint, zbrush, photoshop? basically your 3d packeage. why should indigo have a tool like that?
edit: indigo is a renderer, not a modeling package

Stop telling that, it won't make him get it EVER *sigh*fused wrote:edit: indigo is a renderer, not a modeling package

Re: Displacement map painting tool..?
Perhaps you are missing the concept of a production pipeline, neo0..
Each industry has a suite of transforming tools for it's raw material. In the CG industry, the raw material is generally brought by scenarists, then concept artists, then modelers, texturers, etc... according to the end engine specifications.
You must built your own 3d production pipeline neo0., by choosing the tools you need and like. Nowadays 3d apps are covering much of them, including those you are requesting for Indigo.
I'm glad you didn't post that into the B&R forum... anyways

Very agree to CTZn's opinion about the pipeline. After understanding your needs you choose the tools, then learn how to use and combine them.
Actually, there is such a tool that can help you with bumps and displacements - it is ISL.
I don't know a lot about how to do it in zbrush, but in Blender you can bake textures. Make geometry (you can paint with maps too, like in zbrush, yeah) -> UV map -> Bake -> Use in Indigo
As for adding such a feature to Indigo... There are a lot of options how to get the result without implementing such tools into Indigo. Imagine that amount of work to do it.. nah, not good idea
Let the renderer stay the renderer.

You don't say what 3D package your using but most these days allow direct painting of a UV map - even Blender does! and it's freeneo0. wrote:I thought it would be neat if indigo had a seperate tool that allowed you to paint maps photoshop style (exponent, bump, displacement, etc.) This would be for organic, uneven surfaces like water. But it's what makes the world go round - be a boring place if we were all the same?

Neo,
It really sounds like you need to move on from SketchUp and learn Blender. From the amount of time you spend requesting 'Indigo' features (that belong in a modeling program), you could instead spend that time learning Blender! (which has a lot of the features that you keep requesting for Indigo)
