another sss

thats alot better, ALOT, but still doesnt have enough thinning. there not only needs to be a part that gets thinner being backed by another object, but something that gets thinner that is free floating. i am currently about half way into making my octopuslike material scene, and that ball would make the PERFECT head. then i can figure out which looks better, an angled view with the tenticles spread out, or the view being supspended in a cornell box. the cornell box would completely differ from the maxwell scene, and show not only the reflection, but show how a diffuse/sss material behaves when colors bleed. however its much harder to make a cornell box an engaging image.

I know we're just going to end up going nowhere, but here is what I had in mind for a scene....

thats alright, but too many details. remember, this scene is going to be rendered multiple times at low resolution. whatever you make has to look good without details that you cant see at 300*300 or so.

and arneoog, would you mind posting the file to that somewhere because i would love to try that ball as the head of my "indipuss"

possibly

that might work, but it would be much nicer if you could provide a background to go along with it

Yep, but I cant get uv properly exported for now, so no albedo on background :?

You can download the file in the forementioned thread.

Do yo mean the Maya file or the XML file?? :)

A material preview model should follow something like these criterias:
- 10x10x10 cm
- As few parts as possible
- As round and/or squered as possible
- Has to show Reflection
- Has to show SSS
- Has to show Refactions
- Has to show a 90 degree edge
- Big enough details to be viewed at 220x220 (440x440)
- And it has to be neat and cool, with no irritating shapes..

Someone may correct this list if there is something wrong or weird.. :P

EDIT: I made one more render just for fun :P

.OBJ

Post by oodmb » Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:12 am

.0bj or some sort of common export import format would be best, i'm using blender. if you cant export to any of these formats while still having a toppologicaly neat model, perhaps it would be better to use somebody else's model who can post a format that "works" under any modeler supported by indigo.

as for my take on the scene, i have one realy bad render that you can see, its also from the boring angle and the tenticals arent in the coolest position yet, i still need to figure that out.
i will have the cool angle by tonight or tomorow
its not realy going to look that great untill i get one of the cool sphere's from one of you

i am currently making an armature for the legs so i can figure out a better confuguration of the base. i'm thinking now more like spread out in just a normal scene

I've added a small focused lightsource at the left side of the model.

I actually believe this is an efficient way of displaying all of the desired components of a material.

oh, areoog, i figured out what would make your file perfect! make one end of the partial torus come to a point rather than end in a cut.

I used two materials and a blend between them this time.

flippo, can you upload a .blend or a .3ds, or something, of your scene? I like that idea too.
