.:: Indigo 0.9T5 and Exit Portal -- second part

Post by tizxx » Mon Aug 13, 2007 9:40 pm

Look at this image,

If I have a room with 2 or more aperture I must fill it with Exit portal...
The SUN is masked out by exit portal?

Yes, you have to cover all openings with ep. from where you want the sun to get in. Rays are traced only towards and from exit portal. That's from where the speed-up comes from.

[edit]
Exit portal is telling Indigo from where the sun should get into the room. Then it doesn't have to shoot rays to places where are no openings.

Ok, suvakas, and Ono

when I turned off bidirectional I can see the sun,
but out-side the window with exit portal on
I can't see out-side the room...

It does indeed look like a bug, will have a look at it soon.

oh, aha...

I never tried Exitportals without BiDir xD

very interesting...
so, then, they work different, than I thought....

Anyway, wouldn't it have been better, to have
.:: Indigo 0.9T5 and Exit Portal
NOT scattered into parts?
Everything should be in ONE thread...

So is there acutally a speedup when using exit portals without bidir in comparison with a scene without exit portals and without bidir?

Regarding the first image, Suvakas is correct.
When using exit portals, all openings to the environment need to be covered, if there are any gaps, they will show up as blackness.

Regarding the second image, actually it's not a bug (obviously in retrospect)
The plane outside the room is not visible thru the exit portal, because geometry isn't visible through exit portals, but just the environment (skylight in this case)

Ok. But why isn't the opening without exit portal black as on bidir rendering? To me it seems like rays are traced like there is no exit portal present in the scene.

It doesn't really matter, you're in the realm of undefined behaviour anyway.

Undefined behaviour means you're doing something you shouldn't be doing, so anything can happen; it's not my problem :)

"you shouldn't use exitportals WITH.."
or
"...WITHOUT" Bidir?
