How to make Indigo to use 80% of CPU ?

Post by motorsep » Sat Feb 03, 2007 5:20 pm

If I render with Indigo 0.6 or 0.7, my PC turns of becuase of overheating I guess. So I was thinking if I can make it use less CPU, maybe CPU wouldn't overheat. Is it possible?

Hey motorsep,

Earlier this day I've been searching for such apps in Sourceforge.net, and everything I found was for Linux, a few for OSX however, and none for Windows. Now I've searched again on the www and found this one, wich I haven't tested tho:

ThreadMaster

It is supposed to CLAMP cpu usage, so that's what you need I guess. Lowering process priority won't avoid the maximum usage of the cpu, while this one is supposed to have success here.

Cheers

Dude, if you have problems with your computer overheating, fix THAT.

Do you have a good heatsink on your CPU? Is the fan still spinning? Is there adequate cooling AROUND your computer (not stuck behind a bookcase or something, is it?)?

I have no problem with overheating if I render with Povray, Blender's Internal renderer. But I have that problem with Indigo :(

Where is the logic about that ? Renders are shorter ?

How do you know that the issue is heat? With the subject of overheating we have the luxury of being objective. This website answers some basic questions and provides a chart of cpu max temperatures:
http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.p ... temp.shtml

Here are some links to apps that monitor your cpu temp:
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
http://www.lavalys.com/

Keep in mind, though, that on-board sensors aren't very accurate. Whatever the software says probably shouldn't come within 6 or 7 degrees celcius of the posted max. Zsouthboy's suggestions are a good place to start if heat really is the issue. Is your system over-clocked?

My CPU is not overclocked. And I don't think I have any sensors, because I have old Dell system Dimension 4300S (P4 1.4 GHz)
I can't tell for sure if it's overheating. But since system shuts down on render, I assume it is.
It happens only if I render with Indigo. And shut down happens maximum 1 hr after render has been started.

had the same prob with my laptop. what i did?

got a screwdriver - took the laptop apart - searched for the ventilation-system
- took out - went downstairs to my air-compressor - blew the hell (and dust)
out of it - laptop reassembled - wonder where the remaining screws came from

So often the case!

Seriously, though - an old Dell is probably caked with dust. Good idea, manitwo. Also, make sure you get it out from in between any heat sink fins you can find - not just cpu but northbridge, gpu, ps, etc.
