Blender - The next open movie project

Post by Borgleader » Sat May 09, 2009 8:38 am

For those of you who've been following the development of Blender (before 2.5) and have come across the projects related to it (Orange, Peach & Apricot) might remember Big Buck Bunny (or... Elephants dream perhaps?). Well they're at it again!

Introducing the Durian Project! :D

The Durian project is the new Open Movie project aimed at improving Blender.
Durian Project Website wrote:Yes, it’s about time! The third open movie project had been lined up to start much sooner, but more urgent work (Blender 2.5 coding) forced it into the future. After all, it’s the purpose of the team here in Amsterdam to test and improve the 2.5x versions significantly!
Now we intend to start up September 1, delivering a result around March/April 2010.
Durian Project Website wrote:As usual - like previously for Orange, Peach, Apricot - the Blender Foundation’s interest is to organize projects that will help Blender further:

* Stimulate development of advanced features.
* Validation of Blender by great artists
* Use and improve an open source creation pipeline
* Deliver good publicity and PR for Blender
* Create useful presentation and educational material in Open Content
* Last but not least, provide a fun and inspiring experience for the entire Blender community!

8ce7c1b1c2.jpgWe do this by inviting the best of the talents from the Blender community to work in Amsterdam for half a year or more, in the studio of the Blender Institute. They get excellent working conditions, and full coverage for travel and housing, including a reasonable fee. All of tools we use here for the film are open source, and everything we create, including the final result, is being delivered as free and open content under Creative Commons Attribution.
Blender fans rejoyce! :)

Sounds great. I love that whole design-to-demonstrated-real-world-need paradigm underpinning blender's development and glad it's still going strong.

At the latest Blender Conference, the Durian team revealed the title of the movie (Durian being the name of the project, not the movie itself) as well as a bunch of other information about the movie itself.

To get all the latest news head over to the Durian website

In the mean time, here is the final concept art for the main character (who's name is coincidentally the same as the movie).

Rendering Progress by Brecht the almighty programmer!

Also lots of other news, more artists have been added to the team and others will be joining them in a few weeks. Modeling and animations seem to be coming along nicely :)

I have to say, that I'm not impressed.
Seems like an intro for some game rather than independent movie.
Buck Bunny project looked much better compared to this.

Really nice texture work on that one!
Love that comic-ish look WC3/WoW "introduced" (which is also used by Spellforce 2 and many others)!

The look of the trailer is not the final look of the movie, there was barely any postpro and a amount of things will change and look better, I'm sure.

Fantasy is overrated imo. It seems like every other game or fan made animation is fantasy themed these days..

I can't tell whether the face is beautiful, or creepy :D The mouth in that image is beautiful, but sometimes the eyes appear too large.. but then not. But then yes.

Beautiful images, unfortunately the Sintel logo is the most hideous piece of design of all time.
