Grooves & Scratches vs Bump

Post by Zom-B » Thu Dec 04, 2008 1:19 am

I just found some Papers about some interesting techniques to simulate Grooves & Scratches on surface. It seems to be more physically plausible & better looking than simple bump mapping, that Ono doesn't like because of being a hack anyway...

So here are the links to the Papers:

A Resolution Independent Approach for the Accurate Rendering of Grooved Surfaces (2008)

Realistic Image Synthesis of Surface Scratches and Grooves (2007)

Real Time Scratches and Grooves (on GPU)

General Rendering of Grooved Surfaces

So if I understood, with this way I use my old "black and withe" texture but instead of simulating the reliefs, it simulates the inter-reflections between different values of highness specified in my map, correct?
