Autodesk "Newport" ...

Post by psor » Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:31 pm

I was reading this thread on CGArchitect and thought I should share
the link to the blog which has an "impressive" video to show! 8) :D ;)

nb: You should also read the thread at CGA itself, it's quite entertaining.

Yes I'm planing to buy one, but I need some time to get the 3000,- Euro.

Code: Select all

1x Tyan S5380G2NR i771 Dual Xeon ~ 310,-
2x Intel Xeon DP E5430, 4x2.67Ghz ~ 800,-
2x Kingston Value RAM FB-DIMM 8192 (KIT 8GB 2x4096) ~ 1000,-
...
I guess when I've the money at the end of this year I can get something
better for less money. And of course if I hear "multiple" I would first think
of 4x4 Xeon Quads! But this is way to expensive for me and my needs.

:D :D ;)

psor - u forgot 3000 watt power source and 500e water cooling...lets say 4 quads+8 gigs of fast ram + dual sli 2x GF8800 gtx - thats a bunch of power to feed in...i would rather harn PS3 as a rendermachine - i think it will be possible in future

This would be my workstation, so no rendering on it. That for is the
renderfarm out of Core 2 quads. Much cheaper! There is no need
for an uber PSU since the new CPU's don't need that much power.
And my render nodes just have onboard VGA. My workstation is
also good with one 8800, no need for any SLI either. As I said, that
are my needs. I need more render power instead of Workstation
power. And the PS3 is for kids to render on. Not because of there
Cell CPU's, but the amount of RAM is just *ROFL* when it comes
to serious rendering. :D ;)

and to say smth within the topic itself - if , as they say, this software requires powerful computer - its nothing fancy...as a gamer i can truly tell that well optimized game engine is able to deliver photorealistic type of graphic quality - and it usually requires powerful graphic card - they are much cheaper than multi core AND multi processor (and same time) rendering machine...to conclude - if this presentation was run on core2duo 2.2ghz and 2gigs of ram - i would be impressed...but since they were connected to a small renderfarm..phhhh! who cares...

well you know a little more time and processor speed will double, eight cores/16 threads will be common and this stuff will amost surely happen.... 8)

1- still a couple of years and practically every time they (intel/amd) release new technology we have to buy a new computer - not only processor (ram, motherboard, gfx, hdd) so the price not only doubles but quadruples when comes to the purchase...

2- why 8 cores and 16 threads...i would put equal number respectively

The minimal setup for MR looks tasty. That is laughable if the real-time lighting needs "multiple quad-core CPUs" though, I certainly hope that's only in software mode.
