[REQ] Help me modeling this
[REQ] Help me modeling this
Hi guys!
Need a little help here..
I'm trying to model this, but it seems it's too hard for me to get it right, using sketchup..
It's a stretched metal sheet, I'm attaching the technical reference..
Can anybody give me a hand with this? I'm trying to get a tileable model, which I can reply over the portions of facade I have to cover... I don't need it to have a thickness, but it must be a 3D model (not displaced textures..)
Thank you a lot guys..

Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
Peter Guthrie posted a couple of textures he made to get exactly this material: http://www.peterguthrie.net/blog/2010/0 ... ded-metal/
There's also an explanation of how he generated it, including a screenshot of the model he made.
Basically, since it's an expanded sheet of metal, it's made by cutting little lines into a flat sheet, which is then pulled apart. Below is a little demo I made in Blender very quickly. The thing is you have to then rotate the object so the whole thing lies flat because you end up making a bunch of little 'steps'.

ah, I'm late !
Here's my attempt, not perfect but basic enough to allow you to tweak it. I changed the file extension for upload.
PS: units are centimeters.

Hi thom, Hi CTZn: thanks for your efforts!
@Thom: you posted a very useful link, but for this time I really have to use MODELED GEOMETRY (I'd written that in my first post: NOT displaced textures), because I have pretty close views to do..
@CTZn: when imported into sketchup your model (obj) looks somehow messy... Moreover, it is very rough-edged, and I need it to be smooth.. I was thinking about sort of a bended surface, easy to get with 3dsmax, more complicated (as it turned out..) to do with sketchy...
I repeat: 2D geometry will perfectly do the job guys, as a thickness of 1.5mm is not SO visible..

Hey,
here are two .OBJects — one of them is the part for the arrays, without subsurf and arrays modifiers and the second one is the 10x20 net with subsurf and array modifiers applied.

Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
hi Pibuz,
i've tried to model something like this in the past. I must admit that with sketchup it is little bit tricky. I was in a hurry so i have used some approximation like this attached below back then. It worked for me

Oh ok, it's coming messy... well its supposed to be smoothed to an extent after assemby. Fair enough, didn't model a thing for a while

Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
I know, which is why I also posted an image of a very basic way of modeling it. The reason why I posted Peter's blog post was that he also shows screenshots of how he made modeled geometry of the thing, which are pretty easy to reverse-engineer.Pibuz wrote:Hi thom, Hi CTZn: thanks for your efforts!

Sorry Thom. I didn't mean to be edgy.. very sorry. I really appreciated your link, it's only that it's not very helpful THIS time. It will be for sure very soon though..
Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
Displaced mesh using a ISL shader could be very realistic, even in close-ups! Don't forget that ISL has infinite resolution.

Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
It's a pity that I don't know ISL shader coding even a tiny bit..
I actually thought about this solution: suddenly thrown in the trashcan given the fact that I don't know ISL coding at all, indeed..

Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
Hi, Pibuz, did you try the model I've posted? From you definition it might work for you.
Re: [REQ] Help me modeling this
Hi dakiru. I had some timing problems yesterday, but I gave your model a look last night: seems to work almost good. I have the feeling that the holes are a little too stretched, but it is something I can fix (I think) ... OR ... I'll leave them like they are now and pretend they're actually like that
