New computer - I need some good advice!

Post by Jardar » Thu Sep 08, 2011 6:48 am

My PSU went to computer hell some days ago, and I'm in doubt wether to buy a new one and let my computer last another year or two, or use this as an opportunity to get a whole new computer. I hope you guys will have some advice on what to do, and what's most economic. Of course, I'll be working mostly with Indigo 3 and 3dsmax, but new games like The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and BF3 are also tempting, hehe! I think I will stick with the OS I already own by the way, Windows 7 32 bit.

My old computer (Don't really remmber the details, please bear with me):
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8400 (3GHz)
Radeon 4850HD
*some motherboard from 2008
"2 GB worth of DD3 RAM
*Creative Aduigy ZS soundcard
*Even older cabinet, 2003-ish
*2x250GB HDD

What I plan to buy (suggestions welcome!):
Cabinet: Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced Sort, 19 dBA
PSU: Silver Power SP-SS620M 620W PSU ATX 12V V2.2, 80 Plus Bronze, Modular, 2× 6pin PCIe, 2x 6+2pin PCIe, 9x SATA
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Socket-AM3, Six Core, 3,3GHZ/3,7GHz Turbo, 9MB, 125W, Boxed
MB: Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3, Socket-AM3+ ATX, AMD870+SB850, DDR3, 2xPCIe(2.0)x16, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0
RAM: Kingston ValueR. DDR3 1333MHz 4GB, CL9 Kit w/two matched ValueRAM 2GB DDR3
HDD: Seagate Barracuda® 7200.12 1TB SATA 6Gb/s (SATA 3.0), 32MB Cache, 7200RPM, 3,5"
GPU: Gainward GeForce GTX 560Ti 1GB PhysX PCI-Express 2.0,"Golden Sample - GS", GDDR5, 2xDVI, HDMI, 900MHz

The price tag: $1,311 (expensive, but keep in mind, I live in Norway...)

What do you guys think? I could eventually buy both a new computer and a new PSU, and use the old pc as a slave :P

I personally wouldn't buy a Phenom (yet) but one of the older i7s instead, a 920 or the likes.
I would also save some money on the GTX 560Ti and get a GTX 460 or GTX 480 instead, and use the saved money on some faster RAM, CL9 1333MHz RAM is friggin slow (to me with CL6 1600MHz RAM, that is).
I would atleast try to get some CL7 1600MHz stuff.

First of all using your old Computer as a slave wouldn't really "kick in" anymore compared to a potent master! ^^

We are actually at the dawn of new hardware beeing released (ATI 7000 GPUs and Bulldozer CPUs, Nvidia Kepler GPUs and Intel with new SandyBridge CPUs) end of this year (beginning of next and so on..).

I would fix this old thing and crawl with it to the next gen, investing then for some new awesome stuff.
