Request: Distributed Rendering Indigo Screen Saver!

Post by kououken » Tue Oct 31, 2006 2:37 pm

Ok, so projects like Folding@Home take unused CPU cycles and do something with it.. so I think, why not create something like an indigo distributed screen saver, similar to electric sheep (electricsheep.org). I would be more than happy to devote my computer's down-time to other peoples' renders if it meant I could see some extremely high-mutation images.. and I'm sure other people would too, even if they aren't creating any renders themselves.

I admit I know nothing about coding, but if you've already got the basic server-client code, couldn't this be done? Judging from the renders I've seen, indigo's quality is spectacular; it's number one drawback right now is the debilitating speed. If there were several hundred computers devoted to high-quality renders all the time, the indigo project would have a constant stream of rendering power available.

It's a selfish request, but I want to see even MORE indigo use everywhere!

Thanks for such great software, and keep at it!

something like BOINC?

http://boinc.berkeley.edu

That would be neat! :D But, I don't think many people will be intersted in helping on a project like that :(

IMO bad idea.

Just what Indigo needs is some bad press because some idiot installed it on all of his office's computers and got fired. Or some script kiddy decided to combine it into a simple worm. Bleh.

That's true, I remember that seti@home worm, that would make any computer start processing for a certain individual's account. Besides, people prefer to donate their processors to more humanitarian projects, such as medicine, etc...

something i hope one day (probably very far away) indigo will be able to use the gpu's calculation power to accelerate faster then a cpu ever could. they did that with holding at home, apparently they tested a core duo and a 1900xt and the 1900xt was several times faster.
Yes i know, my spelling sucks

we could create an indigo hamachi network where anyone could ask for rendering power and see if there's anyone available :)

Ah, that's true about the security issue. Screen savers are now one of the biggest ways viruses get onto a system. A reasonably secure screen saver that needs constant internet access does sound like a pretty big undertaking.

I think the hamachi idea would work well though! If I recall correctly, it lets you set up a private network, so there could be xml files in a shared folder somewhere that all users could access. Would it still require clients to manually start each render, or is there some way to run multiple files I wonder? Sign me up anways!

the clients have to start their render processes
It's not a big problem as with Indigo anyone could join in the middle of the render or drop as soon as they need their pcs :)
