network problem

Post by marcus3d » Sat Jul 02, 2011 8:48 am

i am really angry as i could use my network computers for indigo but for some reason i cannot.
i think that there is a bug in indigo.

someone could help me? i have this problem with every version
probably i don't make the right pass to use the network function.

0. i downloaded the demo of the last version of indigo3.0.12
1. i call my master (64bit W7 with quadro 4000) with a name and i set in indigo the name of the pc (look the attachment)
2. i install indigo in every pc of the network and i set in option menu the same name of the master
3. after i open a scene and a start with gpu turn on, it start correctly
4. after i turn on network on master
5. i turn on indigo slave on the clients
6. the master see the slaves and start working but with gpu abilitated the other slave stops working and a message of visual... say that there is an error (i have on every slaves)
consider that the slaves haven't good gpu, no cuda... so i thought that probably every pc must have gpu with cuda in case that i abilitate it on master indigo pc. in fact if i turn off gpu in indigo master, every pc works correctly but
7. the first time that i lanch the scene and render i have no problem
8. if i stop the render on the master pc and i start again 90% of the time the slave stop connecting to the master, they try and they see the master and even it see them but they don't establish a stable connection
9. in the network parameter of the master i see every second that they try connecting but nothing
10. i close indigo and restart but nothing, they continue don't working, so i look the processes in every pc but i don't see any indigo process
11. the only solution is to restart windows so everything is good again but only for the first times, after 90% of the time again the same problem...

i would like to buy this program but if i don't solve this problem i cannot use it!

i would like to use my gpu on my master pc and use cpu on every pc of my network, can be possible?
or use only cpu stably on everypc if it is not possible the first thing.

please answer me soon!!!

Seems there are not many people around having also potent GPUs build in their network slave...

Regarding the GPU rendering on slaves via network: does the network slave render fine with enabled GPU if you start a master rendering on them? Are the GPU drivers up to date... ?
It can be that the render settings of the master get transfered to the slaves 1:1, so a slave with ATI GPU getting instructions to render in CUDA would throw out a error.
Would be nice if somebody of the team could explain if this is the case!

Your issues from point 8 seems strange, maybe a bug...

i use only nvidia cards in two pc of my network and the other have no gpu so work only with cpu.
can be possible to use gpu when in the pcs there is it and use cpu where it isn't?
can be possible to use network with different windows? W7 64 bit, wserver 2008 64 bit, wxp 32 bit??

As i just wrote, i have the same problem (from point 8 to 11) of network connection even with GPU disabled.
i tried even at home using my Gtx 590 2x1,5 Gb and my laptop with gpu with network way but i have the same problem of connection after the first render 90% of time.

i think that it is a bug of indigo at this time.

it makes this problem for any scene exported from c4d.

i didn't try with the test scenes of indigo..

i wait for solutions....

After a little research I have to tell you, that at the moment it isn't possible, simply because the Master sends the scene with render settings to the slaves 1:1.
This seems to be more of a logistic problem in network rendering, and should be "fixed" quite easy, since the master shouldn't care in what mode the slaves render. The master only receives rendered pixel data in form of a IGI file from the slaves!

Rendering across multiple operation systems shouldn't be a issue, I succesfully rendered between Vista 64bit and OSX for example...
Regarding win32 there were some issues fixed in 3.0.9 (see changelog):

Code: Select all

* Using smaller socket buffer size on Windows XP (again!), hopefully fixes SO_SNDBUF problem.
Maybe this still isn't working for you, posting the error log would help here!

Yes, it can be a bug for sure... Indigo 3 is still just released as BETA, so its maybe not bulletproof atm...
any bug reports and issues found are welcome to bring Indigo further to a stable v3 :)

i agree with you, it should be simple to solve the problem of different gpu or cpu in network..

but i have to understand why the slaves disconnect and reconnect after the first good render..
which is the problem?

i can try putting master another pc not w7 to try but i don't think it can solve the problem.
some programmer can understand it.
i will wrote the error it give on the slave pc
