It's rendering correctly emitters as specific kinds of lightbulbs ;) (you get saved from all the tons of work, modelling a realistic light source, and it also renders faster ;) - so, it should be worth it)

as fas as I know IES files need a pointlight (spherical) model to be projected from... that doesn't mean that light will be sprayed in all directions, that's the subtle thing. Maybe by hacking a bit textured emitters on a sphere primitive... ?

With this implementation you can render the exact effect of let's say a halogen 30 lamp and it's wallwash effect on the wall at a given distance from the wall, and not only that, but will make indigo, not only a renderer but a tool for lighting design, which is one of my favourite architectural studies, and one hell of a scientific branch that has more technology that what you can imagine. :D

Ono already said, that he didn't take into account the size part, so, you should use a tiny (tinier) - [even tinier] mesh emitter ;)

The downside of using light definitions is that the luminaire (bulb) itself is not visible as a real bulb or even less as a neon: it's just a sphere :/

it's supposed to be combined with kind of a lamp shade, I guess...
