[REQ] Transculency

Post by dcm » Thu Sep 20, 2012 1:17 am

Possible to add transculency controlled by color and weight map ? Or something similar ?
Or maybe diffuse transmitter controlled by weight map ?

Hi Dcm,
What kind of material are you wanting to make?

I could imagine some leaves that has thinner parts and thicker areas.
I try to get something like that by blending Phong & DT using a "thickness map"...
But doing so the "thiner" areas are getting less reflective... so its a trade-off :/
Would it be possible to have some "Phong Transmitter" material?!

The luminosity of the diffuse transmitter texture acts as the weighting parameter if I'm correct, in wich case hue can be considered separately.

Rather than blending phong with DT, you simply can blend phong with a blend of diffuse and DT (nested blend). Your diffuse color should have the same color as the phong.
The thickness would then controlled by the blending function of diffuse and DT.

By my request i meant, that we should control transparency by weight map = faking simple plane into geometry with thickness with material.
Simply, imagine leaf, which have more thickness towards its center. Now, you can do leaf as "sheet of paper", homogenously transparent in all areas. Or im missing somethnig ? I just want to make leaf where i can control "dark transparent areas" by bitmap. In real life, every leaf have some thickness, transculency...but leaves are not transculent like sheet of paper, homogenously in all areas. There is kind of variation, how light is comming thru leaf and spreading inside of leaf.

Add a color texture to a diffuse translucent material, that will control the color of the translucency. Mix this with a diffuse material with your surface color. The BW mix map will determine the 'thickness' of your material. Mix this blend material with a phong 'surface' material to control reflection / sheen.

Someone already alluded to this setup, which lets you control the apparent thickness of the leaf with the first blend.

PLEASE PLEASE post a graphic scheme!

Sounds to me like you're trying to explain integral calculation without writing down a single number
