PSD layered file support for shaders

Post by StuDIO » Mon Nov 22, 2010 8:39 pm

Hello all - this is my first post, I stumbled across Indigo by accident on the web, I currently use Cinema4d and Maxwell (well I try to use Maxwell but 99% of the time fall back to AR) and must say so far Indigo looks very promising (even more so after seeing the r3 version on youtube with live updating) - hats of to you guys - it's awesome.
BUT -
I am mainly an exhibition designer, and my work has a very strict turn around times. One of the major elements in my scenes are graphic files. In the production of the stand - the amount of changes from the client are generally "ridiculous". To keep time for changes to a minimum I use layered PSD files for over 90% of my materials as they include alpha channels for masks, so no need for a separate mask file. These are normally vector smart objects within the PSD file that open up in Illustrator so they can also be used for artwork when the project goes live - this method is very effective and saves a lot of repetitive work and reduces errors.
SO -
Will/Are psd file formats something on the agenda at Indigo? am I missing something and this already exists?

kind regards

Can you post a link?! I'm not aware of any such feature yet :?

At the moment there is no such support :/
Maybe one Day some of the developers will come up with a igi import Plugin for Photoshop, that would be a start with PS interaction with a glimpse of hope for your request...

Without any knowledge if even possible, I would suggest a Exporter based solution more plausible:
> not each 3D app supports Layered PSD files as Textures where you can pic Layers from for different channels etc.!
This amount of work on the main Renderer would maybe be a little out of proportion.. maybe!

A Exporter based Solution could just open your PSD files in C4D during Export in the background and automatically save Layers it needs as PNG or EXR files. Just some wild theory, no idea if even possible!

So long another timesaver for you could be a smart done PS Action that exports your properly named Layers as PNG files, so usage with Cindigo is easier faster.
I'm really happy that I could educate my customers to have one Indigo based Presentation at the beginning (for actual look & feel and quality check!), then ridiculous many wip corrections in AR and finally the end shot (+minimal corrections) in Indigo again :)
But this mentality of customers may vary from area of business to another!

hmmm..... :?: ...err.. made an error there sorry - I was researching loads of render options early this morning - had a million webpages open - and got excited over nothing it seems - confused that with this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wd4BVzS_ ... re=related

sorry everyone.

Zom-B - Maxwell does the file conversion you are talking about - it's just not up my street with the way it converts the work I do in to studio - there is far too much tweaking out of the main model.

BUT since writing the post I have found that layered tiff files seem to work - filname.tiff in colour channel filename.tiff in alpha. there is an issue if "filename.tiff" is coloured it causes the layer alpha to act like a greyscale mask in indigo- so white is transparent, red is see through, black is solid etc...

still It's a start - and again apologies for the confusion about r3 (very cool regardless)
